From the Looking Glass -- Author Produces Perceptive Poetry That Reflects Modern Society

MIAMI, Dec. 10, 2004 (PRIMEZONE) -- Mirrors show a reflection of the person staring into them, but what they reveal often depends on the perception of the viewer. Angella Ricot takes a literary glimpse into the looking glass and gleans a collection of poems which she uses to fill Mirror of Souls (now available through AuthorHouse).

"This book...is an eclectic book that reflects contemporary society with its problems and its vision," Ricot says.

In Mirror of Souls, she paints a realistic reflection of the modern human condition. Each poem is pulled from the images that stare back at her from the cool glass of the world. Ricot espouses on a wide variety of subjects, from gender roles and love to the global state, and debates with her reflection on issues ranging from fate versus faith to truth versus happiness. Her verses contemplate, but they also offer spiritual hope.

"Throughout the book, the theme is a quest for truth, a quest for freedom; freedom from our daily anguish, freedom from miseries and from madness," Ricot says.

While she deals with her myriad of subjects, she never fails to examine the role of poets in today's society and how that society perceives them. Her socially conscious verses exude a sense of urgency for society she sees rapidly deteriorating. At the same time she never loses sight of the part she plays within the world, such as in the poem, "The New Inferno".

You see these signs for rent: NO CHILDREN, NO PETS./ You wonder if these are not some subterranean/ Creatures who have never seen the light of day/ Beyond the mouth of the abyss./ Or some who have never heard the sounds of / Laughing children./ These, of course, are the masters and mistresses/ Of the scattered tenements in our New Inferno.

For those searching for something to challenge and enlighten them, Ricot invites them to look into the Mirror of Souls. What stares back are the things they perceive.

A seven-time award-winning poet, Ricot has received a plethora of honorable mentions, Poet of Merit, Editor's Choice awards and medallions from a number of poetry contests and societies. Born on the island Hispaniola, she is a graduate of the University of South Florida and is presently pursuing a degree in medicine. Although she has published poems in a number of anthologies, Mirror of Souls is her first book.
