SAN DIEGO, Dec. 16, 2004 (PRIMEZONE) -- Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE: NOC) has received the California Environmental Responsibility Award from the Industrial Environmental Association and the California Manufacturers & Technology Association.
Continental Maritime, a subsidiary of the company's Newport News sector, was honored for demonstrating a commitment to environmental protection and resource conservation.
This award signifies a perfect compliance record for 2004, and Continental Maritime was recognized as the first shipyard in the nation to achieve a zero environmental discharge rate.
The shipyard achieved this by eliminating all discharges, including storm water, to the San Diego Bay. They began the effort in 2001 by installing a collection system to divert all runoff from the San Diego Bay. They also re-routed steam condensate from boilers and air conditioning units to collection tanks for sewer disposal. They used cutting-edge technology to collect fresh water and salt water fire main testing discharge, which is used as fire protection for many of the U.S. Navy vessels moored at the facility. The San Diego Regional Water Quality Control Board has inspected the new fire protection water discharge elimination system and confirmed that all point source discharges have been eliminated.

The Industrial Environmental Association was formed in 1983 to promote responsible, cost-effective environmental laws and regulations, facilitate environmental compliance among member companies and provide related education activities for the community at large.
