Buffalo Technology Announces One Terabyte Network Attached Storage

The TeraStation Is the First User-Friendly High Capacity Network Attached Storage Solution that Combines Ease-of-Use with Enterprise-Class Features

LAS VEGAS, Jan. 6, 2005 (PRIMEZONE) -- CES Booth No. RD1130 -- Buffalo Technology, a global leader in the design, development and manufacturing of wired and wireless networking, storage and memory solutions today announced the TeraStation (HD-H1.OTGL/R5) -- a 1 terabyte Network Attached Storage (NAS) solution. It is the first user-friendly high capacity network storage device designed and priced for the consumer, SOHO and SMB markets.

The product allows users to store files such as music, DVD back-ups, family videos and photos, etc. It also allows users to easily distribute multimedia files around the office, home or even to the Internet with optional group or user level security.

"Consumers and businesses alike are increasingly moving large amounts of data through their network. With the age of the digital home, consumers are recording television programs or music and streaming it to other rooms in the house. Businesses need to store and have access to large amounts of business critical data. This requires a large amount of storage space," stated Morikazu Sano, vice president of product marketing and public relations. "Aside from the fact that it is very inexpensive and easy-to-use, the TeraStation offers a unique, enterprise-class feature set and provides homes and businesses with the ultimate network storage solution."

The TeraStation is a Windows and Macintosh compatible NAS device that offers four 250GB hard drives. The product includes four operational modes: Standard Mode, which allows each drive to be shared as an individual network volume; Spanning Mode, which merges all four drives as a single volume to create a one TeraByte share; Mirroring Mode, which creates two separate pairs of mirrored drives to prevent data loss in the event of drive failure; and Raid 5 Mode, which takes advantage of the popular disk arraying technology. Raid 5 offers increased performance with fault tolerance by spreading data across the four separate drives with uniformity to allow simple data recovery in the event of drive failure.

The TeraStation offers additional data protection by implementing a Journaling File System. This advanced file system allows instant data and operational recovery in the event of a system failure. The TeraStation also features UPS compatibility so the device can be safely powered down automatically or manually.

The TeraStation features four USB 2.0 ports and one 10/100/1000 Gigabit Ethernet port. Up to four external USB hard drives can be connected concurrently to allow unprecedented expandability and backup options. The TeraStation also offers a print server feature so users can share a USB printer over their network. The product offers a powerful backup utility that allows users to automatically backup folders located on their computer to the TeraStation. Users can also backup from the TeraStation to external USB hard drives or another TeraStation. The product's Gigabit connection and Jumbo Frame capability allows for higher transfer speeds than standard Gigabit networks. Users can gain wireless access to the TeraStation when attached to an AirStation or other manufacturer's access point. The product can be used as a central server so users can manage and share stored data. The TeraStation can also be used as a media server when used with the LinkTheater by Buffalo, which enables users to stream multimedia files directly on their television or entertainment system without the use of a media PC.

The TeraStation is made with a Heat Sink Chassis for cooling and an additional silent fan for noiseless operation. Its sleek, aesthetic design and quiet operation makes it the perfect fit for any home or office network environment.

Backed by a limited two-year warranty and toll-free 24/7 technical support, the TeraStation (HD-H1.OTGL/R5) will be available in February 2005 at an estimated street price of $999.99.
