Emulex InSpeed Port Shipments Accelerate, Passing The 4 Million Mark

Milestone Points to Increasing Rate of Growth for the Embedded Storage Switch Market

COSTA MESA, Calif., Jan. 11, 2005 (PRIMEZONE) -- Emulex Corporation (NYSE:ELX), the world leader in Fibre Channel host bus adapters and embedded storage switches, today announced that it has now shipped over four million ports of its award-winning InSpeed(tm) embedded storage switches. Previously, in May 2004, Emulex announced that two million ports of InSpeed had shipped since the technology first became available in May 2002. With over two million additional ports of InSpeed delivered between May 2004 and January 2005, the rate of InSpeed port shipments has nearly tripled over the last nine months, which reinforces the ongoing penetration of InSpeed embedded storage switching technology into various segments of the storage market.

"The sharp ramp-up in customer shipments of InSpeed over the past nine months reflects the storage market's continued acceptance of embedded storage switching as a mainstay of storage array design," said Jim McCluney, president and chief operating officer, Emulex Corp. "Now in its third generation, InSpeed technology first established the embedded storage switch market and, to date, it remains the only broadly deployed, field-proven Fibre Channel embedded storage switch technology in the market. With the addition of Emulex's all-new, highly modular FibreSpy(tm) embedded switching technology, which integrates seamlessly with InSpeed and enables additional levels of design flexibility, Emulex remains ahead of the curve as storage OEMs increasingly embrace embedded storage switch technologies."

InSpeed was the first technology to bring high performance Fibre Channel switching inside the storage array, enabling new levels of Reliability, Availability and Serviceability (RAS) and performance for storage systems. Leading storage providers such as IBM, HP, Network Appliance, Fujitsu, Xyratex, Apple, Quantum, BlueArc and NEC have already deployed solutions with InSpeed.

"Seagate is the pioneer and number one leader in Fibre Channel drives sold and shipped worldwide. The fact that Emulex has shipped 4 million ports of its InSpeed embedded storage switches further validates the extension of Fibre Channel beyond the data center," said Jeff Loebakka, Seagate Technology vice president of marketing. "New applications for Fibre Channel including tiered storage are helping increase InSpeed and FibreSpy deployment and demand for Fibre Channel-based systems that storage vendors are rushing to meet."
