ATLANTA, Jan. 13, 2005 (PRIMEZONE) -- Moreland Photography of Atlanta, GA today announced that photographer Mike Moreland is the winner of numerous awards in a variety of recent photojournalism and photography competitions both in the U.S. and Internationally.
In an international contest conducted in May, 2004, Wedding Portrait Photography International (W.P.P.I.) awarded Moreland with three awards for his work, followed by six more awards in the November, 2004 W.P.P.I. competition.
"Because these contests attract professional entries from all over the world, it would be an accomplishment to win even one award," said Mike Moreland, owner of Moreland Photography. "But to win a total of nine awards from W.P.P.I. was really exciting," he said.
Moreland has been photographing weddings since 1985, when he helped pioneer the art of applying photojournalism techniques to wedding photography. Photojournalism is a specialized area of photography in which the photographer conveys a story with a series of images. Moreland has found success applying a higher level of photojournalism to wedding photography, for which he is now gaining recognition.
In other competitions, two of Moreland's entries were recognized in the Wedding Photojournalism Photography Competition in July, 2004, and six examples of his work won awards in a competition held by the Professional Photographers of America (P.P.A.) in September, 2004. Entries included a photojournalism book and also individual images in the wedding and commercial categories. In addition, the P.P.A. also presented Moreland with the Fuji Masterpiece Award for overall excellence and for winning first place in the commercial photography category in Georgia.
"For years people tried to convince me to enter professional photography contests," says Moreland, "but I wasn't concerned about filling a trophy chest." With encouragement from his associates, Moreland entered the W.P.P.I. competition and found immediate success, prompting him to participate in other competitions.
"I am truly grateful for every honor," said Moreland. He also admits that the most recent trophies certainly dress up his bookcase.
