TeliaSonera first to enter agreement for wireless broadband service with NTT DoCoMo of Japan


STOCKHOLM, Sweden, Feb. 1, 2005 (PRIMEZONE) -- TeliaSonera has become the first European operator to sign a public wireless LAN inter-roaming agreement with NTT DoCoMo, the leading mobile communications company in Japan.

In the agreement with NTT DoCoMo, TeliaSonera customers with HomeRun subscriptions can access NTT DoCoMo's Mzone wireless broadband hot spots at 500 locations around Japan. Starting with TeliaSonera Swedish and Norwegian HomeRun users as of today and Finnish HomeRun users within approximately a month. During January-October 2004, approximately 43,400 persons from the Nordic countries visited Japan, according to information from the Japan National Tourist Organization.

With wireless broadband (W-LAN), travellers and other people wanting to surf wireless with mobile broadband access can connect to the Internet or their own corporate intranet at airports, hotels, conference centres and similar locations. They gain fast access to the Internet, at speeds up to 11 Mbit/s, without the need for cords or a modem.

TeliaSonera's HomeRun customers can leverage the benefits of wireless broadband at more than 10,000 locations in 20 countries. Through inter-roaming agreements, the customers of operators that cooperate with TeliaSonera can use HomeRun at 800 hot spots in the Nordic countries.

TeliaSonera is the first non-Japanese operator in the world to sign a public wireless LAN inter-roaming agreement with NTT DoCoMo.
