Follow Up from Yesterday on News...

Technical analysis is not perfect. There are always going to be misses. Frankly, I'm sort of the opinion that you'll "miss" more times than you'll "hit". That's because we look for entry and exit spots that come after runs up or down and you'll just not always get the "tops" or "bottoms" of a move. But, the BIG moves, we think, are outlined in the underlying stock prices movement, not in "news".

This from a StockPickReport member:

"The news on KKD has been negative for a long, long time with long continued price slide. Yet you routinely have a buy to strong buy. Don't you think this is detrimental to your recommendation? I believe this stock has a above better chance to plummet on the next bad bit of news." -- RK

"RK", you've got the answer to your own question already! If you believe that FUTURE "news" will cause the stock price to drop, then you should SELL. Regarding our rating of KKD, we gave it a sell above $10 and a buy at $9.05 last month. Our recent "buy" ratings may not work out -- that's always possible, but so far, I'm pretty happy with telling folks to sell above $10.

"How about 'weather warnings'? It's 'breaking news' that could help you in 'preparing for something'..."

"Weather warnings" are not "news". They are, WARNINGS. In other words, they express a belief in something that is COMING, not something that HAPPENED. In that regard, we think "weather warnings" are valuable. They are valuable for another reason, though: Precautions you take do not affect other folks from taking precautions. You can walk down into your basement to gain safety from a tornado. But, what if you apply the same logic to a stock's "earning warning"?

If you get a "warning", you may want to sell. But, every share you sell AFFECTS OTHER TRADERS. And, every share THEY sell, affects your holdings.

Therefore, it would be wonderful to know AHEAD of the stampeding herd about a company "warning" of anything. Yet, at best, your knowledge AFTER the fact, or ALONG WITH others will provide for you only the opportunity to be either quicker than the next guy in selling your stock, or smarter than the next guy in buying shares he (they) sells.

We don't like to have to be the quickest, or the smartest. There are always folks quicker and smarter than us. We like the opportunity that technical analysis affords us to plan ahead of the curve what we will do regardless of any upcoming "warnings".
