"House Cleaning Versus Investing?"
You know, I thought I'd seen it all. But, apparently not. Seems like you really can learn something new every day.
A friend recently pointed out to me the plight of her and her husband. Seems like the recent run up in the stock market, while amazing for mainstream wallstreet, did not line the pockets of all Americans.
My friend showed me their finances (more like, their "lack" of finances) a few days ago: Three kids. Husband with tentative work. Bills piled high. Debt eating into savings.
But, that's not the interesting part. What's interesting is that her take on "investing" is really of apathy. My friend has no real interest in "investing" in the stock market.
No, she is interested in making money. Money for her family. Money to pay the bills. Her main source of income now is with a "house cleaning" business (yes, there is such a thing!)
When I talk with her about all the things I usually discuss with day traders, investors, or mutual fund folks, she looks about as bored as you can imagine. But, when I ask about her house-cleaning business, she lights up.
That's when I dawned on me: We all invest in something or another, and it's not always stocks. Sometimes it's in, well, a "house cleaning business" to feed our family.
That's just as important investment as any I can think of.
