NEWPORT NEWS, Va., Feb. 17, 2005 (PRIMEZONE) -- Northrop Grumman Corporation's (NYSE:NOC) Bob Gunter, senior vice president for aircraft carrier programs at the company's Newport News sector, has been named the Virginia Peninsula Engineer of the Year by the Peninsula Engineers Council. He will be honored for his contributions to engineering and leadership excellence during the Council's annual Engineers Week Banquet on Feb. 26.

"Among the six highly qualified candidates nominated for the Peninsula Engineer of the Year Award, Mr. Gunter's exceptional record of leadership, technical accomplishments, contributions to the profession, and community involvement clearly stand out above the field," said Dr. John Lin, president, Peninsula Engineers Council. "For these qualifications, Mr. Gunter was chosen for this honor."

An engineer with more than 20 years of shipbuilding experience, Gunter is responsible for the design, construction and refueling of the most sophisticated ships in the world, Nimitz-class aircraft carriers. He leads more than 3,000 designers, engineers, construction-trades workers and planners and has responsibility for more than $1.3 billion in annual revenue. He also serves on several local engineering organizations and has participated on state, regional, and national engineering boards and panels.

Gunter is also involved with a number of community and civic organizations. He is active in his church where he has held a number of leadership positions, and actively participates in the Boy Scouts of America with more than 12 years experience as a Scout master. He also serves on advisory boards for Virginia Polytechnic University and Hampton University.

Formed in 1970, the Peninsula Engineers Council is comprised of representatives from organizations dedicated to strengthening and promoting the engineering profession in the Virginia Peninsula area. The member organizations consist of 23 local chapters of engineering and technical societies, a local science and education foundation, and three government organizations.
