Emcore Introduces Components for Passive Optical Networks and Ethernet in the First Mile Systems

SOMERSET, N.J., Feb. 18, 2005 (PRIMEZONE) -- EMCORE Corporation (Nasdaq:EMKR), a leading provider of compound semiconductor-based components and subsystems for the broadband, fiber optic, satellite, and wireless communications markets, today announced that it has released a family of component devices for Passive Optical Network, Ethernet in the First Mile, and Fiber to the Premise applications. These advanced Distributed Feedback Laser (DFB) and Avalanche Photodiode (APD) devices will be integrated into products deployed in Ethernet Passive Optical Networks (EPON), Gigabit Passive Optical Networks (GPON), Gigabit Ethernet Passive Optical Networks (GEPON) and Broadband Passive Optical Networks (BPON). These advanced components add to Emcore's strong market position as a leading semiconductor laser and photodiode supplier.

Supported by the long history of similar devices in Emcore's CATV product line, Emcore provides these products with superior performance and excellent reliability. These components can be used for both Optical Line Terminal (OLT) and Optical Network Unit (ONU) applications in all the available PON categories. The APD product supports burst-mode applications with a high sensitivity and large dynamic range, as well as continuous wave (CW) mode for reception of traditionally modulated signals. Emcore's APDs are available in chip, APD-TIA (TO) or ROSA form factors. Its uncooled, directly modulated DFB lasers provide a cost-effective source for OLT units (1490 nm), as well as ONU modules (1310nm). They are available in chip, TO or TOSA form factors. The DFB and APD component devices can also be integrated into other products, such as SONET, SDH, Ethernet and Fibre Channel transceivers.

Dr. Charlie Wang, R&D Director of Emcore's Fiber Optics Division, said, "The PON market is an exciting opportunity for fiber optics industry. Utilizing our existing low-cost production infrastructure and many years of manufacturing experience in optoelectronic devices, Emcore is positioned to support our customers with high quality products, on-time delivery, and great customer service."

According to a December 2004 release from Infonetics Research, "(PON) is growing rapidly in Asia, especially Japan, where tens of thousands of subscribers are using BPON and EPON. With a new round of less expensive products expected in 2005 and 2006, explosive growth is projected in all regions." Infonetics also states, "In the United States, RBOCs launched FTTP rollouts in 2004 and will continue to for the next 10 years, fueling further growth. Verizon has committed to brownfield and greenfield deployments, aiming to pass 1.5 million residences in 2004 and 3 million in 2005."

Emcore is a leading supplier of semiconductor lasers and photodiodes. Its key technologies include TO and OSA packaged optical components for short and long wavelength applications, serving both digital and analog high speed fiber optic communications. In addition to its discrete components, Emcore also offers a line of integrated PON transceivers. These innovative modules are directly integrated into FTTx systems or onto host board adapters.
