The Road to the Top -- Author Shares His Bumpy Journey to Success

PAWLEYS ISLAND, S.C., February 21, 2005 (PRIMEZONE) -- American firefighters command the respect and admiration of people around the world for their courage and dedication. In his new book, The Road to the Top (now available through AuthorHouse), retired Chief Daniel H. Wetsel reveals the path he traveled from an adventurous childhood to a dangerous and rewarding career as a leader in this field.

From the very first page, readers know this man has seen few dull moments in his life. From his family's constant relocations when he was in elementary and high school to his years in the Navy, Wetsel's experiences have been exciting, and he shares his adventures with readers.

Humorous moments and times of sorrow mark his path through life, and his expressive language evokes a myriad of emotions. Incidents involving BB guns and a swallowed quarter spark laughter, while readers quiver with sympathetic anticipation as Wetsel receives his final orders for naval duty. Each anecdote entertains as readers learn about the events that shaped his future.

From his young adult years, Wetsel moves into his time in the fire service, which took him through 34 years of life, and he offers his honest perspective of the field as he details his journey toward a leadership position. He also discusses the varying types of management positions within fire departments with a candor that appeals to readers. One compelling chapter reveals what it was like as a firefighter to visit Ground Zero and witness the destruction caused by the attack on Sept. 11.

The Road to the Top offers an inspiring read for fellow fire chiefs and entertains anyone who loves the occasional foray into someone else's reality.

Born in Staunton, Va., Wetsel spent six years in the Navy and served two years of active duty in Naples, Italy. He later attended the Montgomery College Fire Service Program. During his service as a firefighter, he was promoted to lieutenant and also worked as supervisor of code enforcement and arson investigator. Wetsel retired from the fire service and started his own consulting company, Dancy Enterprises, which dealt with fire codes and safety education. Years later, he served as a fire marshal before being promoted to fire chief. He has also served as South Carolina's State Vice President for the Southeastern Association of Fire Chiefs, which is a division of the International Association of Fire Chiefs. The Road to the Top is his first book.
