Laughing and Learning from Medical Parables -- Author Explores Health Care Field in Book of Zany Short Stories

SALEM, Ore., Feb. 24, 2005 (PRIMEZONE) -- First aid, disease and preventive care do not usually inspire a hearty chuckle. However, the curious mind of Doctor Harry Sockspit offers a hilarious hodgepodge of information that teeters on the verge of useful. He proudly delivers A Cat's Tales: A Collection of Improbable Parables from the World of Medicine (now available through AuthorHouse) for the well-being of readers everywhere.

"A Cat's Tales is a collection of 50 short stories, each one with an underlying medical theme, such as sprained ankles, sore throats, cuts, chest pain and so forth," writes Dr. Sockspit. At times wacky and always wickedly witty, Dr. Sockspit's fables immerse readers in the fictional town of Dustville, where they meet some endearing, if not entirely fortunate, citizens.

Dustville boasts outrageous occupants, such as a dog that drives a car and a moose that plays checkers. A cat named Tabitha regularly appears to add her two cents to the situation at hand, which inevitably ends up with someone requiring immediate medical attention. The maladies and misadventures range from mild illness to deadly pneumonia and fatal car accidents. Through it all, Dr. Sockspit manages to treat even serious topics with a dose of humor and a lesson coated with colorful details for easier digestion.

Unique animals are accompanied by humans, such as Tom, a newspaper delivery boy who has the misfortune of appearing more than once, and Brenda Montgomery, a somewhat weight conscious chocolate accountant who has a plethora of problems. Luckily, Dustville has a team of kindly doctors who are always on hand to help.

An entertaining tour through the world of medicine, A Cat's Tales also empowers readers to be wise consumers of healthcare by illuminating some of the mistakes and misconceptions that can be barriers to a quality experience.

Dr. Sockspit is the alter ego of author Mark Puscas, who is an emergency medical physician. He has worked in the healthcare field for 15 years, with experience in emergency room, urgent care and internal medicine settings. He graduated from Texas A & M University and the University of Texas Medical School. Puscas and his wife, Audrey (also a physician), currently reside in Oregon, where the author also enjoys flying and aerial photography.
