 StockPickReport Commentary

Along the Same Lines As Sunday Night

First let me give you an example of a few market approaches by some famous musical artists:

"Fly me to the moon... Let me play among the stars..." -- Frank Sinatra.

"To Everything (Turn, Turn, Turn)

There is a season (Turn, Turn, Turn)

A time to gain, a time to lose

A time to rend, a time to sew

A time to love, a time to hate

A time for peace, I swear it's not too late" -- The Byrds.

We would give all of our money to the "Byrds" to manage. After all, it looks like they understand sector rotation. They understand when to take profits, and they understand when to get in at the bottom and out at the top. They know when to love a stock and when to hate it and by being at peace with their trading strategy and trading decisions, they can be confident in their decisions.

Frank Sinatra, on the other hand is the eternal optimist (like the CNBC-ers). He's the broker who calls you up and says "this stock's going to the moon... baby!"

There are times in the market to jump in with both feet and times to sit back and watch. There are seasons for everything. A time for yields, a time for growth, a time for value, a time for large cap, a time for small cap, a time for international, a time for high beta and a time for low beta.

When virtually every indicator is showing an overbought, risky environment, we want to buy stocks that aren't volatile. We want stocks in an overall uptrend (not bottom fishing), and we want stocks that actually have earnings.

What one must realize is that investing environments change. Every week does not offer the same opportunity as other weeks. Neither do other years. We've seen quite a run in the indices of the past two years now. We've seen oil touch a record high and we've seen ExxonMobil now become the largest publicly traded company.

"You can't create opportunity in the markets, you can only take advantage of it." That's another great investing quote. Sometimes the opportunity is greater than at other times, but there is always opportunity nonetheless.

I want to offer up two "boring" stocks to take a look at: Crescent Real Estate Equities Co (symbol: CEI) and CH Energy Group Inc (symbol: CHG). Both of these are very low beta stocks. CEI's beta is 0.36 and CHG's beta is 0.249. All a beta means is how volatile a stock is compared to the S&P 500. So, these are LESS THAN HALF as volatile. CEI has a whopping 9.28% yield and CHG has a 4.77% yield. Both of these stocks have hit technical "bottoms" as well.

One trend that we see over and over again is that people rotate out of high yielding stocks into the high-flying stocks. Then the high-flying stocks top-out, while the high yielding ones go lower. Now the high yielding stocks have an even higher yield, since they pay out the same dollar amount per share which translates into a higher yield. By switching between these two when the time is right is a great strategy. With such a low beta and such a high yield, I'd consider both of these stocks as "money waiting to strike" when the market gives us signs to jump back in with both feet.
