StockPickReport Commentary

Return of the VIX

Today's major headline: "Ex-WorldCom Chief Ebbers Convicted of Fraud". What amazes me is that this CEO bought stock all the way down.... he should have been a subscriber to StockPickReport where we certainly would have told him not to do so with the technicals looking so bad.... where do these CEO's come from anyway?

Oh well.

Last week we also wrote about the IPO, ISE Options going public. The IPO that we compared it to, CME, the Chicago Mercantile Exchange bottomed out about 10 days after it IPO'd. We'll look for the same type of move for ISE. 5 more days to go. Hopefully we can get in around the low to mid 20's. That should be one to hold for many years.

How does one get rich in the market? The ONLY way is to have at least a few BIG HOME RUNS. I am talking gains of 200% - 300% or more on a single stock. That can take a few months or years of holding sometimes, but that's how you do it. So, we'll look to pick up ISE soon and see if ISE can do just that for us.

Also...

On March 06, 2005 we wrote you a daily commentary about the VIX indicator. I have also added it below today's commentary. It's worth bringing up again because the VIX was so low a few weeks ago and has started to trend back up. Take a look at the 5 day chart here vs. the S&P 500 index.

http://finance.yahoo.com/q/bc?t=5d&s=%5EVIX&l=on&z=m&q=l&c=spy You can see the inverse relationship. This is telling me that now ISN'T the time to be a hero in the market. Go low beta. Consider yesterday's recommendations to "park" some money for a while. Now is the time to "sell the rallies" not "buy the dips". I would buy stocks listed on the NYSE rather than NASDAQ at this point. We have an overweight recommendation on CEI as of today. (See yesterday's commentary).

When the VIX trends back up, you can buy some insurance on your stocks in the form of protective puts. If you REALLY want to hold some stocks, but some puts on them and go out about 3-6 months. Buy puts a few dollars higher than your stock is at. Chances are, should the stock go down, your put will go up and you can get a profit on your put. Even if the stock stays strong and the VIX goes up, your put should increase in value.

Gold is also holding steady at $440/ounce. We recommended it at $420/ounce under symbol "GLD" That's also a great place to "park" some money for a while and have it ready to strike on a market rebound.
