EMS Technologies to Provide RF Control Hardware for Boeing's High Definition Television Satellites

WASHINGTON, March 23, 2005 (PRIMEZONE) -- Satellite 2005, Booth No. 635 -- EMS Technologies, Inc. (Nasdaq:ELMG) announced today at the Satellite 2005 tradeshow that its Defense & Space Systems (D&SS) Division will deliver hardware for two next-generation Ka-band satellites that Boeing will build for DIRECTV, Inc., the nation's leading digital television service. The DIRECTV satellites, slated for launch in 2007, are to be built by Boeing's Satellite Development Center, based in El Segundo, Calif., and will enable DIRECTV to deliver more than 1,000 high-definition (HD) local channels and 150 national HD channels and other advanced programming to consumers by 2007.

The satellites' multiple high-power amplifiers will depend on EMS's technology for two functions. On the input side, EMS will supply the amplitude and phase adjustment networks. On the output side, EMS technology will provide the isolated combining networks for the high-power TWTA outputs.

"We are pleased to be supplying Boeing with high-power ferrite technology and unique packaging technologies to support its next-generation direct television satellites," said Jay Grove, senior vice president and general manager, EMS D&SS Division. "This satellite production order falls on the heels of our successful collaboration with Boeing on the Anik F2 satellite to provide high-performance switching capability to support North America's first commercial satellite-based broadband communications service."
