Transmission Constraints, Hot Weather Could Mean Power Problems for Southern California This Summer

SDG&E, ISO Discuss Chance of Blackouts, Conservation Efforts

MEDIA ADVISORY, April 22, 2005 (PRIMEZONE) --

WHAT: -- Hear from state officials, SDG&E on the outlook for
             summer power reliability.
-- Learn what SDG&E has done to prepare for potential
problems and help ease the demand on the regional
             energy system.
-- Get details on programs that can help save energy
and money for San Diego consumers.

WHY: Last summer, on Sept. 10, 2004, SDG&E set a new
record for peak demand for the first time in more than
seven years. The California Independent System Operator
(ISO) also reported a new statewide record for peak
electricity use last summer. As electricity demand
continues to grow and energy infrastructure struggles
to keep up, the ISO says the possibility of regional
power outages is back again this summer -- especially
in Southern California. In light of the strong interest
and concern over the summer power issues, SDG&E
accelerated its efforts to get a new power plant and
key transmission line energized in time to beat the
             summer peak demand.
