After The Bell Market Commentary
On Tuesday, the markets closed lower despite strong corporate earnings as investors focused instead on declining consumer confidence. The Consumer Confidence Index slipped 5.3 points in April to 97.7, the lowest level since a November reading of 92.6. However, sales of new homes in March jumped 12.2% setting a new record of a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1.43 million units. The Dow fell 91.34, or 0.9 percent, to 10,151.13. The Nasdaq composite index lost 23.34, or 1.2 percent, to 1,927.44. The S&P 500 index was down 10.36, or 0.9 percent, at 1,151.74. The Russell 2000 index was down 8.78, or 1.5 percent, at 587.66.
