Start Mother's Day Weekend With 'Not Your Mother's Menopause' Web Chat Friday, May 6

WILMINGTON, Del., April 28, 2005 (PRIMEZONE) -- Is talking about menopause any way to start Mother's Day weekend? The health experts at the Embracing Women's Health movement think it's a great idea.

On Friday, May 6 at 3:00 p.m. EDT, women of every age can begin their Mother's Day weekend by logging onto http://www.EmbracingWomensHealth.com to listen to Susan Love, M.D. and ask questions. The live experience promises not to be like any conversation many women may have had in the past with their own mothers about menopause.

Dr. Love is a renowned authority on women's health issues and a member of the national team of LLuminari health experts and physicians. Her live web chat titled, "Not Your Mother's Menopause," can be heard and viewed on the popular Embracing Women's Health website that has developed a growing national following of like-minded women who want practical, easy-to-understand health information for women. Dr. Love promises to dispel the many myths about menopause, putting "old wives' tales" to rest during the live web chat.

Dr. Love wants women to be aware of new information about menopause, including implications of the latest research, so that all women can make their own informed and educated decisions.

"Menopause was once something women were ashamed to talk about or admit they were going through," Dr. Love said. "As a result, much of what was 'known' about menopause was merely folklore, even from our own mothers, rather than fact, and surprisingly was supported by the medical establishment of the day," she said. "Thankfully, we've made a lot of progress over the last fifteen years and it's important to share that progress with all women."

In her "Not Your Mother's Menopause" web chat Dr. Love will challenge women to examine menopause on several different fronts including the medical, mental and emotional implications as well as possible treatment options. "Medical experts remind us that menopause is a normal life stage for women and that education, and not necessarily medication, can be a viable treatment option," she said.

First of Two Web Chats Planned by Embracing Women's Health Movement

Dr. Love's "Not Your Mother's Menopause" web chat is the first of two scheduled in May at the site, www.EmbracingWomensHealth.com. The second web chat "Strong Women Have Heart," is scheduled for Friday, May 20 at 3:00 p.m. EDT and will feature Dr. Miriam Nelson with important information on how heart disease and the symptoms of a heart attack are very different in a woman than in a man. Dr. Nelson also will introduce her new book "Strong Women, Strong Hearts," during her live web chat.

"The facts about heart disease in women are startling," Dr. Nelson said. " During this live web chat, we'll explore statistics that show the increasing rate at which women are dying each year from heart disease-one woman every minute-which translates into almost a half million deaths annually. It's also troubling that women succumb to heart disease at a rate ten times greater than that for breast cancer."

"By giving women the undiluted facts and statistics that pertain specifically to their gender, it's easier to focus on the steps they need to better manage their own health," Dr. Nelson said. "Women deserve to know exactly what they are up against, and knowledge is power when battling chronic illnesses like heart disease."

Registering for the New Web Chats

Women can pre-register at anytime for the web chats at www.EmbracingWomensHealth.com. During each web chat, the doctor's initial remarks will be streamed live on the Internet at the web site. Following initial remarks, registered participants will be able to ask questions using their keyboard in a moderated chat. Selected questions will be answered live by the doctors. Participants submit questions anonymously; submitted questions will be visible only by the moderator and each medical expert, not the national group of participants. Each web chat is scheduled to last for one hour and virtual seating is unlimited-there is no limit to the number of participants across the country.

While at the web site, web chat participants also may join the growing network of Embracing Women's Health members-a grassroots, gender-specific health education movement of people sharing their knowledge and inspiration with each other.

"Women readily share health experiences with each other," said Elizabeth Browning, Founder and CEO, LLuminari. "Through www.EmbracingWomensHealth.com, LLuminari is providing women a place to connect, access to the country's top experts through innovative programs like our new web chats with Dr. Love and Dr. Nelson, and the opportunity for women to become their own health advocates."
