Meridith's Restaurant Honors Mothers during May, Contributes to American Breast Cancer Efforts

BERWYN, Pa., April 28, 2005 (PRIMEZONE) -- Meridith's, located on Leopard Road near Lancaster Pike, is pleased to announce the award-winning BYOB eatery will honor Mothers throughout May with a donation made on behalf of each patron to The American Cancer Society's breast cancer research and awareness program.

Meridith's is open for breakfast and lunch, as well as BYOB evening dining Tuesday through Sunday from 5-9 PM. "We wanted to honor all Mothers, not just on Mother's Day, Sunday, May 8th, but throughout the month," said Meridith McLoughlin, owner, in announcing the May effort. "We are offering a special menu for Mother's Day, but this will provide a month-long contribution towards hope and a cure for this devastating disease," said Meridith.

Winning "Best of the Main Line" awards in 2003 and 2004 from Main Line Today Magazine for their prepared gourmet foods and corporate catering, owners Meridith and George McLoughlin know the restaurant business and their clientele well. They have positioned Meridith's with a desire to fill a unique niche among Main Line dining establishments -- delicious food, bring-your-own-beverage service, offered in comfortable casually elegant surroundings.

Accommodation for 75 guests is complimented with outdoor cafe dining beginning this month, weather permitting. A private dinning room is available for parties up to 30 guests. Reservations are accepted on weekends, but walk-ins are always welcomed. We look forward to serving you!

Backgrounder: Mother's Day. In the United States, Mother's Day was first suggested in 1872 by Julia Ward Howe (who wrote the words to the Battle Hymn of the Republic) as a day dedicated to peace. Ms. Howe would hold organized Mother's Day meetings in Boston, MA every year.

In 1907 Ana Jarvis, from Philadelphia, began a campaign to establish a national Mother's Day. Ms. Jarvis persuaded her mother's church in Grafton, West Virginia to celebrate Mother's Day on the second anniversary of her mother's death, the 2nd Sunday of May. By the next year Mother's Day was also celebrated in Philadelphia.

Ms. Jarvis and her supporters began to write to ministers, businessman, and politicians in their quest to establish a national Mother's Day. It was successful as by 1911 Mother's Day was celebrated in almost every state. President Woodrow Wilson, in 1914, made the official announcement proclaiming Mother's Day as a national holiday that was to be held each year on the 2nd Sunday of May.

Meridith's is a member of the Pennsylvania Restaurant Association (MRA).
