Lantronix WiBox Named Mid-Market 'Product of the Year' by CMP's VARBusiness Magazine

IRVINE, Calif., May 4, 2005 (PRIMEZONE) -- Lantronix (Nasdaq:LTRX) today announced its WiBox wireless device server has been named mid-market "Product of the Year" by CMP Media's VARBusiness magazine.

The biweekly magazine, which provides strategic insight to technology integrators solicited input from information-technology (IT) vendors and solution providers to determine which products and services were best for mid-market customers -- companies with between 100 and 999 employees. Entries were considered and reviewed by VARBusiness editors who made their selections out of more than 400 nominated products.

"Our readers tell us that the middle market is one of the fastest-growing IT categories today," says VARBusiness Publisher Robert C. DeMarzo. "Lantronix's WiBox is one that best meets that segment's needs."

"We are honored to be recognized by VARBusiness and to receive this award highlighting our WiBox product," said Chris Humphrey, vice president of marketing for Lantronix. "The market has seen a huge proliferation of wireless PC products getting connected to the network. Now, with our WiBox, integrators can wirelessly network-enable nearly any type of new non-standard product including industrial equipment, medical and security devices, A/V projectors and much more," Humphrey added.

Traditionally, WiBox has been used by OEMs and manufacturers to network-enable a wide variety of finished goods and equipment. Because WiBox is simple to use, the product is now achieving widespread acceptance from solution providers who are going beyond the standard computer and network services. As an example, using WiBox, solution providers can now connect and manage remote devices on a network, then actually provide service and support for those devices. To support resellers interested in this new approach, Lantronix offers a Managed Service Provider (MSP) Resource Center website that helps the broader reseller community learn more about how to implement an MSP business model.

"As a pioneer in network-enabling devices, Lantronix is now creating the pathway for the new data center," said Marc Nussbaum, president and CEO of Lantronix. "As we, with our solution providers, bring many new types of products into the data center, we will be forging a new path where IT expands to include edge devices out in the field or spread around the office. It's all about how access to everyday devices creates an advantage for business."

Lantronix WiBox will be featured and profiled in the special May 2 VARBusiness "State of the Midmarket" issue.

About WiBox

The WiBox is a two-port external device server that enables virtually any piece of electronic equipment with a serial port to be connected to 802.11b wireless networks quickly and easily. The WiBox creates an IP network address for the serial device, and can provide on-board email and message-based monitoring capabilities, as well as a virtual user interface that is compatible with industry standard web browsers. The product is ideal for applications where a connection to industry standard wireless access points can eliminate the expense of installing physical cables. The WiBox is the first product of its kind to address applications requiring stringent security by providing end-to-end data protection using a NIST-certified implementation of 256-bit AES encryption as specified by FIPS 197. It helps users increase the value and functionality of their existing/legacy equipment by making it possible to access and manage those devices over the network or Internet.

Small enough to fit almost anywhere, the wireless WiBox is especially useful in areas difficult or impossible to reach with cable or in situations which require greater mobility. Cost-effective and scalable, the WiBox also provides a way for traditionally non-networked devices to be integrated with newer networked systems and maximize investment in equipment.
