After The Bell Market Commentary
On Wednesday, the markets rallied to close higher as oil prices retreated to settle at $50.45 a barrel. The Commerce Department reported that the U.S. trade deficit fell sharply in March to $54.99 billion, the lowest level in six months. The Treasury Department's monthly budget report showed that the federal government had a surplus of $57.7 billion in April, the biggest monthly surplus in three years. The Dow closed up 19.14 points, or 0.2%, at 10,300.25. The Nasdaq Composite rose 8.78 points, or 0.5% to 1,971.55. The S&P 500 gained 4.89 points, or 0.4%, to 1,171.11.
