Media Advisory -- From Global to Local: How Local Media Covers the Middle East

DEARBORN, Mich., May 17, 2005 (PRIMEZONE) -- The Congress of Arab American Organizations of Michigan (CAAO) invites you to join with Detroit-area media representatives at an exclusive luncheon to discuss local and national coverage of Middle-East and Arab-American issues. This luncheon will take place on Wednesday, May 25, 2005 from 11:30 a.m. -- 1:30 p.m. at the Al Berdouni Restaurant, 5821 Chase Road, Dearborn, Michigan (Between Ford Road and Warren Avenue).

While enjoying your lunch, our guest speakers, Dr. Ali Abunimah, Ph.D., and Ms. Allison Weir will make presentations about U.S. media coverage of the most incendiary of all Middle-East issues: the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Time will be allowed for questions and comments following the presentations.

Ali Abunimah is a Chicago-based writer and commentator who writes extensively on the Palestinian/Israeli conflict. His articles have appeared in the New York Times, Chicago Tribune, and Financial Times. He has also made hundreds of radio and television appearances.

Allison Weir is founder of "If Americans Knew," an independent research and information-dissemination institute. A former freelance journalist, she now researches, writes and conducts public forums at hundreds of venues across the U.S. She has spoken at Harvard Law School, Stanford, Columbia, The Fletcher School of Law, Northwestern University, The National Press Club and UC Berkeley.

"At this time, the peace process in the Middle East is at a crossroads, information sharing is crucial for us to have a more accurate understanding of the Palestine/Israel conflict," said Hasan Newash, coordinator of the event. "This luncheon will help media representatives understand the possibilities of the success or failure of the peace process."

The Congress of Arab American Organizations of Michigan (CAAO) is an umbrella group comprised of 40 Arab American organizations in Southeastern Michigan.

Please RSVP at 313-945-9660 by May 23rd. This is a complimentary luncheon and space is limited, so an early RSVP will insure seating. Further, each media organization should limit attendance to no more than three people.
