Northrop Grumman Helps Local Teachers Earn GLOBE Certifications to Expand Instruction About Earth's Environment


REDONDO BEACH, Calif., May 24, 2005 (PRIMEZONE) -- Following four days of intense study hosted by Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE: NOC), 13 local elementary and middle school teachers earned certifications that expand their credentials for instructing students in the dynamics of the Earth's environment.

They became part of the Global Learning and Observations to Benefit the Environment (GLOBE) program, a hands-on, school-based, science and education organization. In addition to receiving GLOBE Program Teacher Certification, each teacher was awarded a $1,000 grant from Northrop Grumman's Space Technology sector to purchase science materials for their classroom.

With this training, they will be able to direct their students in measuring physical, chemical and biological properties of the atmosphere and climate, hydrology, soils, land cover and plant phenology. Once the measurements are taken, the students will be able to input and analyze data via the Internet and interact with GLOBE scientists around the world.

The GLOBE program is managed by the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research in partnership with Colorado State University and is supported by NASA, the National Science Foundation and the U.S. Department of State.
