The American Academy of Professional Coders Announces Specialty Credentialing

SALT LAKE CITY, June 3, 2005 (PRIMEZONE) -- The American Academy of Professional Coders (the Academy) is pleased to offer specialty-specific credentialing to all certified members of the Academy. Beginning September 2005, the Academy will offer credentials for the specialties of Evaluation and Management, General Surgery and Obstetrics and Gynecology. The Academy, in cooperation with Ingenix, has produced an in-depth study guide for each of the first three specialties to be offered. In keeping with our "upholding a higher standard," each specialty credentialing exam has been designed to allow the coder the ability to demonstrate their aptitude, proficiency and knowledge with in each chosen area of specialty coding. These specialty exams are comprised of 75 questions and will be administered online, producing instantaneous pass/fail results. Once a Certified Professional Coder (CPC) or Certified Professional Coder-Hospital (CPC-H) has passed a specialty exam, they will receive a specialty certificate and be awarded the appropriate credential.

The Academy was founded upon a commitment to promote "upholding a higher standard" for medical coders and to become the leading credentialing body in the coding arena. The Academy's membership is currently over 43,000 strong, spanning the United States and several foreign countries, with over 29,000 members holding the highly recognized credentials of CPC and CPC-H. In addition to certification exams, the Academy offers educational curriculums, educational workshops, an annual conference and membership services on the local chapter level.
