ADVA Optical Networking's New FSP 150 Release Enables Wide-Scale Rollout of Ethernet Services

ADVA's suite of Ethernet-transport access devices simplifies network rollout and reduces Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) for carriers as they expand offerings


MAHWAH, N.J. and MARTINSRIED/MUNICH, Germany, June 7, 2005 (PRIMEZONE) -- -- Chicago/SUPERCOMM 2005 -- ADVA Optical Networking (FSE:ADV) today introduced Release 2.0 of its Fiber Service Platform (FSP) 150 series of access devices for fast, cost-effective rollout of Ethernet services to mass markets. This release of the FSP 150 family features a new tandem node protection mechanism, an enhanced customer premise demarcation unit and a new Gigabit Ethernet aggregation device -- all designed to improve a carrier's flexibility, dramatically simplify management of services and reduce total cost of ownership (TCO).

ADVA will demonstrate the FSP 150 in Booth No. 39025 at SUPERCOMM, June 7-9, at McCormick Place in Chicago.

Key carrier market dynamics have driven the release of the new FSP 150 features. New applications based on Ethernet transport are becoming more attractive to both enterprise and residential customers, and legacy networks, typically based on Synchronous Optical Network/Synchronous Digital Hierarchy (SONET/SDH) or Layer 2/Layer 3 technologies, do not cost-efficiently scale for extensive rollout.

"There is a clear market need for managed Ethernet-based services," said Brian Van Steen, Senior Analyst with telecom market research and consulting firm RHK, Inc. "New revenue streams for high-value, differentiated Ethernet services can improve service providers' revenue growth, but to date it has been difficult to affordably expand these offerings to the wide market that wants them."

Based on the IEEE802.3ah, Ethernet in the First Mile (EFM) standard for Operations, Administration and Maintenance (OAM), ADVA's FSP 150 is a carrier-class family of products expressly designed for mass-market delivery of Ethernet-based services. The FSP 150CP customer premise device allows very simple, inexpensive, managed demarcation of the carrier network, and the FSP 150MO/ME and FSP 150MG aggregation devices are designed to optimize the access infrastructure. The carrier is enabled to introduce any voice, data or video service simply, securely and cost-effectively over a shared infrastructure. Because the FSP 150 family is interoperable with legacy SONET/SDH and Layer 2/Layer 3 infrastructures, the carrier can evolve today's network for next-generation services.

In Release 2.0 of the FSP 150, ADVA has optimized network management and enhanced carrier flexibility in a variety of ways:

-- The new FSP 150CP demarcation device supports variable data rates up to and including Gigabit Ethernet, allowing support for a host of diverse carrier services including Emulated Line, Emulated LAN and Virtual Private Network (VPN) services. This capability ultimately enables migration to tuneable-bandwidth services.

-- The new FSP 150MG aggregation device's rate-control functionality enables over-subscription of "bursty," sub-rated Gigabit Ethernet traffic from up to six customers, ensuring optimal usage of available network bandwidth for applications such as Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) backhaul.

-- The FSP 150 tandem node protection capability insulates the core and access domains of the carrier network. Protection events that occur in either domain of the network are handled locally and transparently. This unique feature cost-effectively delivers carrier-grade protection for Ethernet services in tree-and-branch or ring networks without requiring overlay protocols such as Spanning Tree that are complex to administer.

-- Advanced performance monitoring and traffic management have been implemented across the entire FSP 150 family, enabling carriers to more efficiently maintain service-level agreements (SLAs). These traffic-control mechanisms are compliant with Metro Ethernet Forum standards.
