From Shepard's Pie to The Irish Jig: The 2005 Irish Festival at The Great Plaza at Penn's Landing

PHILADELPHIA, June 9, 2005 (PRIMEZONE) -- As one of the many PECO Energy Multicultural Series' events, the Irish Festival is the most productive. Irish culture is celebrated on the Great Plaza at Penn's Landing, Columbus Boulevard and Chestnut Street. The festival of music, dancing, food, and entertainment will be held Thursday , June 23 from 7:30 p.m. - 9 p.m., Saturday, June 25 and Sunday, June 26 from 1 p.m. until 9 p.m.

This year's Irish Festival adds a Thursday night event. Thursday night will offer a Boxing Match event. Holy Family Boxing Club from Belfast Ireland will take on the Harrowgate Boxing Club from Philadelphia. The event will start at 7:30 p.m. and tickets for Thursday night only will be $25.00. Tickets can be ordered by calling 215-465-1778 or 215-744-5503. They can also be purchased at Finnigan's Wake, 3rd and Spring Garden Streets.

The 7th annual Irish Festival is a family event that features well-known Irish musical performers. The gates will open at 1 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday and admission is free. Guests can enjoy the music of the Bogside Rogues, Sean Fleming, Peter McDonald, Danny Boys, Con, Scyothian, Jameson, and Shantys will also take the stage during the festival.

In addition to great musical performances, the Irish Festival has something for people of all ages. There will be bagpipers, face painting, and Irish dancing along with other entertainment for the kids. Local dance schools will conduct dance exhibitions and there will also be an Irish dance contest. The kitchen from Finnigan's Wake will be serving Irish favorites such as Shepherd's Pie, Bangors and mashed potatoes, and pulled pork. Many vendors will be selling traditional Irish goods and crafts.
