Duckwall-ALCO Stores Upgrades Website, Offers Gift Cards

Online Gift Cards, Ad Circulars Expected to Boost Traffic to Website


ABILENE, Kan., June 16, 2005 (PRIMEZONE) -- Duckwall-ALCO Stores, Inc. (Nasdaq:DUCK) has introduced a newly revamped website, www.alcostores.com, which now offers gift cards for purchases in Duckwall-ALCO stores.

Although gift cards had been available in the company's stores, customers are now able to order them online. Gift card sales have been strong for Duckwall-ALCO and other retailers, especially in recent years. In a February 4, 2005, article, The Wall Street Journal reported that gift cards made up about $20 billion in expenditures during the holiday season. Duckwall-ALCO gift cards, which are available in denominations of $5, $10, $25, and $50, are expected to be well-received by consumers.

In addition to the gift cards, the new website -- which has both an English and a Spanish version -- will feature the current ad circular, employment opportunities, answers to frequently asked questions, and the opportunity for customers to provide feedback. The site also has an easy search process for store locations.

The enhanced Investor Relations section of the website provides easy access to the company's press releases and copies of recent Annual Reports. In addition, it provides information on officers and directors and links to stock quotes and other corporate governance issues.

Virginia Meyer, Director of Marketing and Advertising for Duckwall-ALCO Stores, directed development of the site. "This new site is very user-friendly," said Meyer. "We expect to see an increase in website traffic as our customers and shareholders frequent the site. And because any good website is a work in progress, count on us to continue to upgrade this site, enhancing the customer experience each and every time."

Bruce Dale, President and Chief Executive Officer of Duckwall-ALCO Stores, said, "In addition to the new website, we have several other initiatives underway to improve our service to our customers. For instance, we are formalizing our online shopping strategy, and we will soon be implementing a new Point of Sale system that will greatly improve our in-store experience and reduce our out-of-stock situations."
