PlateSpin Announces New Technology That Addresses the Last Mile of Adaptability(tm) in the Data Center

PlateSpin's New OS Portability Technology Breaks the Dependency Between Hardware Infrastructure and Server Software

TORONTO, June 21, 2005 (PRIMEZONE) -- PlateSpin Ltd. today announces new OS Portability technology that enables the complete interchange of data, applications, and operating systems (the software layer) across the Intel infrastructure in the data center. From most any target, to most any source, PlateSpin's OS Portability technology can automate the migration of the software layer to the servers that best match the needs of the workload, all from a single point of control. This breakthrough technology allows automated movement between physical servers (single CPU, SMP, multi-cores and Blades), virtual infrastructure servers (VMware ESX, GSX and Microsoft Virtual Server), and archived images (Symantec Live State, Acronis TrueImage, Ghost and others) to optimize the data center according to the capabilities of the physical and virtual infrastructure. For the first time, the software layer can be completely de-coupled from the hardware and its related infrastructure models, allowing data center managers to maximize the usage of their existing hardware resources, and adapt to changing conditions with speed and agility.

"The uses for this technology, especially in data centers with multiple types of infrastructure, are just now being understood in the marketplace" said Stephen Pollack, PlateSpin's CEO. "The capability to move the software layer between any combination of physical servers, virtual servers, and images, allows for quick and painless server consolidations, easier disaster recovery to maintain business continuity, dynamic business service optimization as well as a host of other uses such as improved test lab efficiencies and hardware migration. This type of flexibility has not been possible until now."

With this new OS Portability technology, it becomes possible to freely move workloads between the different infrastructures in the data center from anywhere to anywhere, including across slow-speed networks or WANs. This includes the common physical infrastructure configurations from vendors such as IBM, HP and Dell as well as the newer virtual infrastructures from VMware and Microsoft and the new Blade form factors. OS Portability also encompasses server image deployment direct from leading image formats to any hardware, physical or virtual; making hardware constrained images obsolete which is ideal for long-term business continuity planning.

"I have a number of potential clients who are interested in the new technology for DRP purposes," says one of PlateSpin's channel partners involved in the technology trials. "We provide data center services including DR, server and storage consolidation, enterprise SAN and backup, etc., to large and small customers alike. A toolset that breaks the hardware dependency barrier in the Wintel market is a key value we can bring our customers."

"With a solid Virtual2Physical migration capability we would likely run more virtual environments in production and likely have an increased use of Physical2Virtual. Also of interest is the Physcial2Physical (to allow direct hardware migrations). We have all been faced with trying to restore or migrate complete systems from older hosts to newer hosts. To date, we usually are forced to rebuild the new server from scratch, which is costly and time consuming," said a large government department in the U.S.

An evolutionary step from the proven technology of PlateSpin PowerP2V, OS Portability ushers in a new era of data center adaptability. OS Portability is currently available as a technology preview from PlateSpin. PlateSpin will be releasing more information about the OS Portability technology and its associated commercial products in July. Customers who are interested in reviewing the technology should register for the beta trial program at www.platespin.com/betatrial-London.
