The Last Pilgrim -- Unique Autobiography Recounts One Man's Life and Lineage

EAU CLAIRE, Wis., July 12, 2005 (PRIMEZONE) -- Their collective courage and resolve in the face of two of the nation's worst calamities earned them the title, "The Greatest Generation." Floyd Wells' new book, The Last Pilgrim (now available through AuthorHouse), follows one member of this storied group of Americans from childhood to manhood.

Wells stood, as did so many others, with one eye toward his parents and his patriotic upbringing, and the other toward the future with its teeming potential and opportunities. The Last Pilgrim focuses on his transition to maturity amid the backdrop of America's own evolution from a country on the cusp of greatness to its ascension to the leader of nations.

Wells' story is as unique as it is commonplace, played out by millions from big cities and small towns throughout America in the 1930s. In a series of vignettes, he paints the landscape of an America absorbed in its own crises but stubbornly confident of its inevitable victory over economic depression and, later, its enemies. This confidence, writes Wells, was based on the "rock," the American people; people like Wells with humble beginnings and large dreams. These men and women lived the stories that Wells portrays throughout The Last Pilgrim. As readers enter their world to endure their hardships and happiness, their stories tell of fulfilling the promises of the early settlers.

Wells was born in Chippewa Falls, Wis., in 1923. He graduated from Chippewa Falls High School in 1941 and went on to serve in the Pacific Theater during World War II. He and his wife, Deloris, settled in Eau Claire, Wis., after the war. After retiring, Wells went on to pursue his passion for writing. He published poetry and many magazine articles before passing away in April 2004. He made his family promise that his story would be published, and the wish is "cheerfully granted by his daughter and son as a gift to Dad."
