ServGate Becomes First UTM Vendor to Standardize Integrated HDDs to Seagate's Full Disc Encryption Technology

MILPITAS, Calif., July 26, 2005 (PRIMEZONE) -- ServGate Technologies -- the only provider of best-in-class unified threat management (UTM) platforms -- announced today that the company will standardize its integrated hard disc drive (HDD) to Seagate Technology's new Momentus 5400 Full Disc Encryption (FDE) drive, providing an extra layer of protection for data captured and quarantined to ServGate's UTM HDD.

ServGate's UTM platform leverages a robust hard drive from Seagate to uniquely deliver fully integrated, third party software -- such as McAfee's virus and spam protection applications -- and quarantine files containing malicious content to prevent replication to other hard drives within the network. By standardizing its integrated hard drive to Seagate FDE, ServGate is going one step further than competitors, many whom lack any kind of HDD, to provide the strongest data protection possible in a UTM device.

"The strength of Momentus 5400 Full Disk Encryption is the fact that it is hardware-based, performing all of the cryptographic functions within the drive," said Daniel Good, vice president, advanced market concepts, Seagate Technology. "Even the user key is encrypted and stored in a hidden area of the drive, making it unavailable to probing or OS-based attacks. In addition, data on retired drives can be made inaccessible by simply executing a single command that destroys the user key. Together, these capabilities deliver stronger security that enhances the broader ServGate solution."

Seagate's Momentus 5400 FDE comes encryption ready and requires only a user key to employ. The drive encrypts all data on the drive, not just selected files or partitions. These functions and others are key components of Seagate's DriveTrust Technology, a suite of security features inside the drive that enables robust system-level security such as key management and recovery.

"For the first time in the modern threat era, ServGate and Seagate are turning the table on increasingly brazen hackers by denying the hard drive as the 'host' to computer viruses, who often target vulnerable client PC or mobile HDDs as conduits to damage a company's IT assets or steal corporate data," said Atchison Frazer, vice president of marketing, ServGate. "With ServGate's UTM gateway, we are able to leverage Seagate's industry-leading HDDs to quarantine exploits at the network edge, and now with the adoption of the FDE-enabled hard drive, deliver an added layer of protection to totally lock down the sensitive and privileged data that ServGate captures."

The integration of Seagate's hard drives is strategic to ServGate's UTM platforms:

 1) So-called blended threats that combine multiple attack vectors
in one payload are often very large files that traverse the
network gateway in separate packets; ServGate's security
operating system (SGOS) with integrated HDD is able to arrest
and isolate blended threat content and files in a gateway
quarantine, creating an edge-based bulkhead against further
transmission to other HDDs such as mail or web servers, desktop
    PCs and mobile devices.

 2) SGOS' best-in-class, trusted brand incorporation of proven
security leaders, such as McAfee and SurfControl, requires an
integrated HDD in order to run current and future applications
in context with other network services in real time at the
gateway with minimal degradation to network performance.

 3) Running SurfControl's pre-integrated dynamic web filtering
application, in concert with SGOS' HTTP virus screener,
requires a HDD to enable web caching, a ServGate feature that
allows fully inspected URLs to propagate more speedily to the
end-user level. Screening for attacks on the HTTP protocol
defends against viruses, worms and Trojan horse programs that
might be embedded in a JPG attached to web page. SGOS' HTTP
virus screening tool can quarantine such web-borne spyware
executables to the EdgeForce integrated hard drive.
