Engenio Selects Emulex's InSpeed for Its New 4 Gb/s Storage Controllers -- Deal Reinforces OEM Demand for Next Generation SAN Infrastructure Solutions

Design Win Coupled With General Availability of Emulex 4 Gb/s Fibre Channel Connectivity Solutions Signals Ramp in Market Adoption

COSTA MESA, Calif., Aug. 8, 2005 (PRIMEZONE) -- Emulex Corporation (NYSE:ELX), the industry's preeminent source for a broad range of advanced storage networking infrastructure solutions, today announced that Engenio Information Technologies, Inc. has integrated the Emulex 4 Gb/s InSpeed(tm) SOC 422 embedded storage switch into its 6998 4 Gb/s Fibre Channel storage controller. In addition to using InSpeed to enhance RAS (Reliability, Availability, Serviceability) and performance, the Engenio storage controller is fully backward compatible with existing 2 Gb/s and 1 Gb/s solutions, which simplifies the transition to higher speed networks.

"Emulex is teaming with partners, such as Engenio, to lead the migration to 4 Gb/s technology solutions, which is validated by this design win, and further reinforced by its first-to-market position with production available 4 Gb/s PCI-X 2.0 and native PCI Express HBAs," said Mike Smith, executive vice president of worldwide marketing for Emulex Corporation. "Emulex has taken an aggressive position in the marketplace to deliver next generation speeds by teaming with its partners, like Engenio. Both companies worked in close collaboration to deliver integrated 4 Gb/s solutions to its customers."

"After the success Engenio experienced with Emulex's 2 Gb/s InSpeed SOC 320, we felt confident that the implementation of the Emulex 4 Gb/s InSpeed SOC 422 would be just as seamless," said Julie Ryan, Engenio Director of Alliances. "Four Gb/s Fibre Channel solutions represent the next-generation of performance for storage networks, and it is great to work with a company such as Emulex that is just as eager as Engenio to bring the future of storage to the present."

Engenio is a global provider of innovative and highly scalable modular storage systems for the open enterprise and its technology is at the heart of state-of-the-art storage solutions sold by leading companies such as IBM, SGI, and StorageTek. The 6998 controller is based on Engenio's new XBB(tm) architecture, and coupled with Emulex InSpeed solutions, brings the RAS and performance benefits of embedded switching to Engenio and its OEM customers.

The Engenio 6998 controller features sixth generation system technology and offers the same extensive capabilities and functionality as other Engenio Fibre Channel systems. The new system provides customers with twice the per-port bandwidth, twice the connectivity and up to eight times the cache of Engenio's current 2 Gb/s Fibre Channel systems. Its multiple cache offerings, which scale from 4 GB up to 16 GB, enable customers to optimize their configuration to best fit their application requirements.

About the Emulex 4 Gb/s Family of SAN Connectivity Solutions

Emulex boasts a broad range of production available 4 Gb/s SAN Connectivity solutions, including HBAs, IOCs and embedded storage switches. Emulex's award-winning, field-proven InSpeed embedded storage switching technology enhances the reliability, serviceability, and performance by bringing switched connectivity inside the storage system. With its third generation InSpeed ASIC, Emulex has increased both the speed and port count of its embedded storage switch technologies. In addition to 4 Gb/s performance and 22 ports, the SOC 422 supports in-band communications, eliminating the necessity for a costly external processor for SCSI Enclosure Services (SES) and lowers OEM implementation costs by more than 50 percent over previous generations.

The Emulex suite of 4 Gb/s infrastructure solutions includes general availability of its 4 Gb/s LightPulse Fibre Channel HBAs and IOCs for both PCI-X 2.0 and PCI Express-based servers. Designed to meet the needs of multiple solution environments, ranging from blade servers to enterprise and midrange storage systems, Emulex's 4 Gb/s products feature the latest ARM processor and integrated memory to maximize efficiency in the most data intensive environments.

Customers utilizing Emulex 4 Gb/s HBAs and IOCs may take advantage of robust features, such as BlockGuard(tm), which was designed by Emulex to provide end-to-end data protection. Emulex's BlockGuard implementation is based on the Data Integrity Field (DIF) industry standard and is key to enabling reliable delivery of data across the storage network.
