Emulex Teams with Oracle to Provide Support for High-Performance Linux-based Storage Technologies

Emulex Showcases 4GBs Fibre Channel Solution for Oracle Cluster File System 2

SAN FRANCISCO, Aug. 9, 2005 (PRIMEZONE) -- LinuxWorld Conference and Expo -- Emulex Corporation (NYSE:ELX), the industry's preeminent source for a broad range of advanced storage networking infrastructure solutions and Certified Partner in the Oracle(R) PartnerNetwork, is working closely with Oracle to provide qualified and supported solutions for clustered file systems within Linux-based Storage Area Network (SAN) environments.

At this week's LinuxWorld conference and expo in booth #949, the two companies are showcasing industry-leading performance and availability, leveraging the Emulex 4Gb/s PCI Express HBAs and the new Oracle Cluster File System 2 on Linux. Emulex HBAs and drivers are supported and integrated into the Oracle Linux stack and are available now for use with Oracle Cluster File System 2 as well as other Oracle Database solutions such as Automatic Storage Management (ASM).

"Oracle was the first to offer a commercially available database designed for Linux operating environments, and as more and more customers deploy SANs, we realize the importance of working strategically with industry leaders such as Emulex," said Wim Coekaerts, director, Linux Kernel Engineering at Oracle. "The joint demonstration at this week's LinuxWorld event will effectively showcase the robustness and rich feature set available now within Linux environments."

"The culmination of this joint effort between Emulex and Oracle offers a fully supported and integrated database solution, which leverages the unique benefits derived from Emulex's commercially available 4Gb/s PCI Express Fibre Channel HBAs and drivers within RHEL 4 for robust database applications," said Mike Smith, executive vice president of worldwide marketing at Emulex Corp. "Emulex offers industry-leading Linux-based SAN connectivity solutions, and customers relying on Oracle database applications may realize the benefits of best-in-class Emulex SAN connectivity solutions in a fully supported environment."

Emulex continues ongoing collaboration with Oracle to help ensure fully interoperable solutions and is also part of the Oracle PartnerNetwork.

Oracle Cluster File System 2 is an enterprise-class open-source cluster file system that provides customers with a free alternative to expensive proprietary systems. Oracle Cluster File System 2 allows all nodes in a cluster to access a file system concurrently, which dramatically simplifies the management of databases shared across a cluster. For Oracle Real Application Clusters customers, this eliminates the need to manage and set up raw disk devices, making cluster database administration markedly easier. The update also includes expanded capabilities to run non-database, standard file system operations, giving the new release additional value as a general-purpose file management system. Oracle Automatic Storage Management (ASM) is a new feature in Oracle Database 10g that provides the database administrator with a simple storage management interface that is consistent across all server and storage platforms. As a vertically integrated file system and volume manager, purpose built for Oracle database files, ASM provides the performance of async I/O with the easy management of a file system.
