Celebrate African Dance, Music, and Culture at the 2005 African American Cultural Extravaganza

Part of the Peco Energy Multicultural Series at Penn's Landing


PHILADELPHIA, Aug. 16, 2005 (PRIMEZONE) -- On Saturday, August 27 and Sunday, August 28 from Noon to 8 p.m., the customs of Africa and African Diaspora will be brought to the waterfront for the African American Cultural Extravaganza. This FREE festival, presented by the African Heritage Center, will take place at the Great Plaza at Penn's Landing, Columbus Boulevard and Chestnut Street. The African American Cultural Extravaganza, is part of the 2005 PECO Energy Multicultural series at Penn's Landing. Entertainment including crafts, food, music, poetry, and dancing will be included throughout the day during this event. PECO Energy presents a series of ten different Multicultural festivals throughout the summer season. Independence Blue Cross is the presenting sponsor of the 2005 Summer program at Penn's Landing.

The African American Cultural Extravaganza entertainment lineup includes everything from gospel, jazz, blues, reggae, and soulful music. Saturday August 27 will feature a musical tribute to Georgie Woods. Woods, a legendary radio personality from Philadelphia was on the air for more than 40 years and was able to introduce a lot of up-and-coming musical acts to the listening audience and the world. Such groups as The Orlons, The Original Blue Notes, and The Delfonics will headline the entertainment scheduled for the first day of the festival. The Mad Lads Revue, Phyllies Intruders and the Dave Bush Dancers will also perform on Saturday.

Sunday, August 28, 2005 will feature a Celebration of African and Gospel Rhythms including Spoken Word, poetry and dance. Dance is an important part of this cultural celebration. Dance groups performing include Universal Creative Art and Dance Ensemble, Troupe DaDa African Dance and Drum Ensemble, Kulu Mele African Dance and Drum Ensemble. Gospel recording artist Nicole Torrie will also perform on Sunday.

The African American marketplace on the Great Plaza will feature traditional African American, Caribbean, and African food and handicrafts. There will be a Children's Area featuring arts and crafts, magicians, storytellers and face painters. In addition, visitors will be able to learn more about numerous not-for-profit and human service organizations.
