Emulex HBAs Support New HP Systems Insight Manager 5.0 for Seamless Management of Storage Area Networks

Emulex SMI-S HBA Implementation Now Certified by HP for use with New HP SIM 5.0 Solution

COSTA MESA, Calif., Aug. 22, 2005 (PRIMEZONE) -- Emulex Corporation (NYSE:ELX), the industry's preeminent source for a broad range of advanced storage networking infrastructure solutions, today announced that its SMI-S-compliant LightPulse family of HBAs for Windows and Linux is fully tested and certified for use with the new HP Systems Insight Manager (SIM) 5.0 management solution.

As companies' system and storage infrastructures continue to expand, it becomes increasingly important to manage components widely distributed across network, including potentially hundreds of Emulex HBAs. The Storage Management Initiative Specification, commonly referred to as SMI-S, is a standards effort spawned by the SNIA to help simplify the management framework within storage area networking environments. The Emulex HBA Provider is the industry-standard layer for delivering SMI-S compliant solutions, which allow customers to closely monitor and manage Emulex HBAs from within the SMI-S-based HP SIM 5.0 application stack. This capability is supported across the market-leading family of LightPulse Fibre Channel HBAs, including its generally available 4Gb/s PCI-X and PCI Express and the 2Gb/s LP10000 family of HBAs.

"This announcement with HP is a major milestone for Emulex's SMI-S development, as it marks the general availability of Emulex's SMI-S HBA implementation," said Mike Smith, executive vice president of worldwide marketing at Emulex. "The SMI-S standard allows the exchange of management information across various vendor solutions in a uniform and extensible way. With HP's market-leading SMI-S implementation driven through HP Systems Insight Manager 5.0, customers may now manage the storage infrastructure in a seamless, integrated manner. Now our customers can more easily deploy, upgrade and monitor their storage systems, regardless of size, with a streamlined and integrated set of tools. Emulex fully supports the SMI-S effort, as it makes life easier for our mutual customers."

"HP customers continue to deploy Emulex HBAs for reliable SAN connectivity, and by virtue of this announcement, customers can now rely on industry-standard SMI-S-based tools to enhance the management of their systems," said Rich Escott, director of storage management software, HP. "HP Systems Insight Manager 5.0 is a robust centralized system and storage management solution that helps our customers improve efficiency and reduce the cost of maintaining their IT infrastructures. Emulex SMI-S HBA Provider allows us to easily integrate and leverage the enhanced management solutions associated with Emulex HBAs via SIM 5.0."

The Emulex SMI-S-based HBA Provider has achieved approval from the Storage Networking Industry Association Conformance Testing Program (SNIA-CTP) and offers a native, SMI-S 1.0 conformant implementation operating across its entire family of LightPulse HBAs. Available now across all major platforms, including 32- and 64-bit Windows and Linux, Solaris and HP-UX, the Emulex HBA Provider is also fully backwards compatible with the entire installed based of Emulex HBAs, enabling today's SANs to benefit from next-generation features and benefits. Emulex's unique firmware-based HBA architecture, together with its SMI-S HBA Provider, offers customers an exceptional combination of investment protection and a seamless migration path to ongoing SMI-S compliance.

The Emulex HBA Provider also leverages the comprehensive management instrumentation built into the company's well-known HBAnyware centralized HBA management framework. The driver-based instrumentation and advanced management features of HBAnyware enable customers to leverage and extend the capabilities that SMI-S 1.0 defines. Emulex will enhance its offering by implementing extensions to the SMI-S models and, as a result, the Emulex SMI-S HBA Provider offers an efficient and seamless way for SAN management partners to easily integrate advanced, in-depth management of Emulex HBAs natively.
