Flawed Expectations of an Expatriate -- New Book Traces Woman's True Story of Abuse by Spouse, Two Legal Systems

SUFFOLK, England, Sept. 21, 2005 (PRIMEZONE) -- News today is rife with stories of domestic abuse and the complications of its aftermath, but for a distinct segment of victims caught between the legal systems of two countries, it exposes a deficiency within the United States that demands attention. In her new book, Lost in the Void (now available through AuthorHouse), L.M. Walker seeks to educate Americans living abroad about the dangers of depending on a seemingly ambivalent legal system.

"Where do you turn when you're living in a foreign country and there's no one willing to help you rescue your children out of the hands of an abusive parent?" she asks. "What do you do when the very people that are meant to be protecting your children are the ones who are hurting them the most?"

Lost in the Void chronicles Walker's traumatic and timely story as she and her children find themselves caught in a battle of bureaucracy between two countries -- England, where they live, and the United States, where Walker was born in. Readers share her fear and frustration as neither nation is willing to acknowledge or fix the other's mistakes.

Walker is able to cut to the core of what she calls "serious flaws" in the judicial and social care systems of the United Kingdom. In the end, she says, these iniquities affect all Americans. Hers is a tale of trying to find someone -- anyone -- who would help her. She lays bare the secrecy behind these practices which leave the public at risk of "further gross violations of their human rights because no one knows what goes on behind closed doors."

"This is the true story of one woman's fight for her children while she and they are being beaten, raped and held prisoner against their will, all in the midst of shocking discoveries, blatant prejudicial behavior and conspiracies at the highest levels," writes Walker. "Truth becomes blurred in the law free void between the U.S and U.K., where everything and anything is fair game."

Walker was born in Wisconsin and traveled extensively in Europe from 1995 until the birth of her twin daughters in 1997. She and the children moved to England, where they currently reside, in 1998. Walker has had several poems and photographs published, and she is currently working on a book comprised of both. She is also working on a master's degree.
