LUND, Sweden, Oct. 12, 2005 (PRIMEZONE) -- Scalado announces today Scalado Random Access JPEG ICL Plug-in, which is the ideal tool for Symbian licensees to boost their JPEG coding in all ICL dependent applications. The ICL plug-in or "Image Conversion Library" will significantly increase imaging performance with very low memory requirements. It replaces existing ICL functions in Symbian phones, instantly making them much faster.
Applying photo effects to a 2 mega pixel image using conventional technology would use up to 12 MB of the phone's RAM memory --memory that just isn't available. Using Scalado's patented technology RAJPEG, the whole operation can be completed up to 10 times faster and using less than 0.5 MB of RAM. The ICL plug-in uses the RAJPEG technology.
"Our ICL Plug-in offers much faster image processing as it enables functions such as zooming and panning in an image by setting a region-of-interest. The RAJPEG engine will then scale and decode that region only, resulting in very short processing times", says Sami Niemi, CTO Scalado.
In addition to the standard CFbsBitmap format, the extended plug- in also allows output buffers in RGB and YUV formats. This enables developers to write high performing imaging applications for multi- mega pixel camera phones on top of the ICL Plug-in.

OS phones are growing in popularity. As of Q2 2005, cumulative shipments of Symbian OS phones reached almost 40 million and year on year phone shipments grew more than 190% compared to the same quarter last year. According to technology analyst firm Canalys, overall global shipments of smartphones up 105% year on year in Q2 2005 with Symbian emerging as the market leader.
