BALTIMORE, Oct. 24, 2005 (PRIMEZONE) -- The Maryland Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation announced that Northrop Grumman Corporation's (NYSE: NOC) Advanced Technology Laboratories were approved for the Voluntary Protection Program Star Award, one of the highest safety honors in the country.

The award was presented by the Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation and Maryland Occupational Safety and Health (MOSH) officials Oct. 19, 2005, at the Northrop Grumman facility in Linthicum, Md.
In order to be approved for the Voluntary Protection Program, a MOSH evaluation team reviews safety and health-management systems, employee training and involvement, and application of appropriate resources into these areas.
"Voluntary Protection Program sites like Northrop Grumman prove the investment in the MOSH program is an effective allocation of resources," said Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation Secretary James D. Fielder, Jr. "Maryland Voluntary Protection Program participants experience fewer employee injuries and illnesses, reduce worker's compensation costs, improve productivity and employee morale and achieve recognition in the community."
In addition to the outstanding Voluntary Protection Program accomplishment, the Northrop Grumman facility has also achieved an injury and illness incidence rate nearly 53 percent below the national average for its industry. The United States has over eight million worksites but only 1,300 have received Voluntary Protection Program distinction.

Part of Northrop Grumman's Baltimore-based Electronic Systems sector, the Advanced Technology Laboratories employs 650 workers in the design, development and manufacture of semiconductors used in ground and airborne radar systems, communication equipment and intelligence devices. The Voluntary Protection Program Star Award is the highest achievement recognition offered by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration and Maryland's Occupational Safety and Health division for outstanding workplace safety and health management.
