When Disaster Strikes, Be Ready -- New Book Details Essential Steps to Prepare for Unexpected Tragedies

COMMERCE, Ga., October 26, 2005 (PRIMEZONE) -- As hundreds of thousands of people struggle to recover from Hurricane Katrina's devastating effects, waiting for help that is slow to come, it has become painfully clear: survival begins in the home, not at the government level. The Earthling's Guide: Being Prepared for Disasters & Emergencies (now available through AuthorHouse), by Cheryl Adams, offers all people the power of simple survival techniques.

A lifelong resident of the South and a professional in the realm of emergency response, Adams has seen firsthand how people's lives can change in a matter of minutes. Simply being prepared for disasters can mean the difference between helplessly waiting for aid and calmly making the necessary decisions to keep the entire family as safe as possible.

The Earthling's Guide includes strategies offered by federal, state and local agencies, as well as Adams' own family disaster plan to give readers plenty of options. She emphasizes the importance of tailoring plans to each family's needs, a process which requires regular attention and open communication, and she even reveals the contents of numerous kits that can save lives in a variety of situations. For example, "The Grab and Go Evacuation Kit" takes care of a family for three days while "The Food and Water Storage Kit" is a must for sheltering in place. These important tips and more are detailed in this indispensable manual.

From natural disasters to terrorist attacks, the possibilities for emergency situations are endless. Yet a majority of people remain unprepared. "To prepare just takes a little time and planning," Adams writes. "Why haven't you done it?"

Born in El Dorado, Ark., Adams grew up in Farmerville, La., and moved to Baton Rouge to pursue a career in law enforcement communications. First employed by the Louisiana State Police, Troop A, Baton Rouge, she became the supervisor of communications for nine parish areas. During this time, she experienced a variety of disasters and worked closely with numerous agencies to provide public assistance. After leaving a position with the Iberville Parish Sheriff's Office, she started her own law enforcement communications training program in which she has shared her knowledge of emergency preparedness. She now lives in Commerce, Ga., where she works in the medical field. Being Prepared for Disasters & Emergencies is her first book and the first of her "Earthling's Survival Series." The second installment will be The Earthling's Guide: Food Storage, Survival Techniques and Camping Manual. For more information, visit www.Earthlings101.com.
