Emulex's New HBA Driver Qualified by Sun Microsystems for the Solaris 10 Operating System

Emulex 4Gb/s Dual Channel and Single Channel PCI-X and PCI-E Fibre Channel HBAs Achieve Solaris 10 Certification

COSTA MESA, Calif., Oct. 27, 2005 (PRIMEZONE) -- Emulex Corporation (NYSE:ELX), the industry's preeminent source for a broad range of advanced storage networking infrastructure solutions, today announced the qualification by Sun Microsystems of the Emulex-based Solaris Fibre Channel Architecture (FCA) driver that supports the family of Emulex LightPulse(r) 2Gb/s and 4Gb/s HBAs. The availability of a single Emulex FCA driver, which is integrated into the Sun StorEdge SAN Foundation Software for use with the Solaris 10 Operating System (OS), enables end-users to benefit from a fully supported solution across the installed base of Emulex and Sun-branded HBA models (SG-XPCI1FC-EM2 and SG-XPCI2FC-EM2). In addition, Emulex's 4Gb/s dual channel and single channel PCI-X 2.0 and PCI Express HBAs have achieved Solaris Ready certification for both SPARC processor and x86/x64 systems.

"Emulex has been a valued partner and the Solaris Ready certification of both single and dual channel 4Gb/s PCI-X and PCI-E HBAs demonstrates Emulex's market leadership and commitment to the Solaris platform," stated Juan Carlos Soto, Vice President, Software, Sun Microsystems. "This certification provides Solaris users fully compatible and interoperable, market-leading 4Gb/s Emulex SAN connectivity solutions."

With a large installed base of HBAs within the Solaris OS environments and a long standing history of supporting mutual customers, the new Emulex FCA driver helps meet the needs of Sun's large Solaris customer base. Additionally, Emulex provides the management, scalability and performance benefits that fully complement the robust features of the Solaris OS within SAN environments.

"Sun and Emulex are enabling customers to protect their existing SAN investments by deploying a single FCA driver that supports both Sun-branded HBAs from Emulex, along with previously installed 2Gb/s HBAs and newly announced 4Gb/s Emulex HBAs," said Mike Smith, Executive Vice President of Worldwide Marketing, Emulex Corp. "This flexibility allows end-users to continue deploying Emulex SAN connectivity solutions that they have trusted throughout their Sun data center environments, without needing to replace previous investments."

Product Information and Availability

The new Emulex FCA driver for Sun-branded HBAs (Models SG-XPCI1FC-EM2 and SG-XPCI2FC-EM2) and the Emulex LightPulse family of 4Gb/s and 2Gb/s solutions is available this week. With a robust HBA driver implementation that complements the Solaris OS environments, customers may leverage the inherent scalability and performance advantages built into the Emulex family of HBAs. The Sun-branded StorEdge HBA Models SG-XPCI1FC-EM2 and SG-XPCI2FC-EM2 are available from Sun and its channel distribution partners.

The Sun-branded Emulex HBAs are also supported by Sun for Windows and Linux server environments, as part of Sun's Open SAN initiative. A major benefit for large heterogeneous data centers is Emulex's unique Universal Boot capability that allows end users to seamlessly deploy the same HBA across multiple hardware architectures and operating systems to enable FC boot from SAN. Additionally, Emulex is part of the Sun (sm) Partner Advantage Program and plans to leverage its various programs and benefits to provide sales support and education surrounding the benefits of standardizing on Emulex HBAs throughout the data center.
