Internationally Acclaimed El-Funoun Palestinian Dance Troupe to Perform in Dearborn, Michigan on Saturday, December 3, 2005

Michigan is Chosen Because of its Large Arab American Presence

DEARBORN, Mich., Nov. 21, 2005 (PRIMEZONE) -- El-Funoun, the internationally acclaimed Palestinian dance troupe with 32 dancers from Palestine, will perform on Saturday December 3, 2005 at the historic Fordson High School Theatre in Dearborn, Michigan. Doors open at 6:00 p.m., and the performance begins at 7:00 p.m.

Hasan Newash, director of the Palestine Office-Michigan sponsoring the event said, "I had the opportunity to see El-Funoun in Palestine a couple of years ago; it was an exhilarating experience, filled with energy, life, and artistry." He went on to say, "El-Funoun is on par with the Irish dance troupe Riverdance, and we are proud to have them represent the Palestinian/Arab culture as they perform in Michigan."

For their unprecedented performance in Michigan, the program will include El-Funoun's most acclaimed repertoire as well as several dances from their latest production, "Haifa, Beirut & Beyond," a contemporary Palestinian dance saga of love, exile and resistance, inspired by the poignant poetry of Nobel prize nominee, Palestinian poet, Mahmoud Darwish.

In creative and stirring choreographies, El-Funoun dances the tragedy of dispossession and oppression, as well as the dream of justice, peace and dignified living. Described as "unparalleled energy, choreographed into exquisite dance movements of Palestinian folk art," the performance involves elaborate and vibrant costumes and a rich, highly expressive musical score, including original compositions by the world-renowned Arab musician, Marcel Khalife.

Established in 1979, El-Funoun hopes to promote cultural dialogue between both the Palestinian People and the American People. The troupe will also perform at the United Nations, New York City, and Washington, D.C., in addition to Dearborn, MI.
