NEC Selects Emulex InSpeed SOC 422 for Entry-Level and Midrange Storage Solutions

Emulex InSpeed SOC 422-Based Switched Bunch of Disks Integrated Into NEC's iStorage Solution for Enhanced Reliability and Serviceability

COSTA MESA, Calif., Dec. 5, 2005 (PRIMEZONE) -- Emulex Corporation (NYSE:ELX), the most trusted name in storage networking connectivity, today announced that NEC Corporation has integrated its award-winning InSpeed(tm) embedded storage switching technology into the newest models of NEC Storage S series line of midrange and entry-level storage solutions -- the S500, S1500 and S2500 models. NEC has incorporated Emulex's InSpeed SOC 422 to create a "switched bunch of disks (SBOD(tm))" application, which dramatically improves the performance, reliability, availability and serviceability (RAS) of storage solutions by bringing switched connectivity to each individual disk drive within the storage array. These models, integrated with Emulex's InSpeed SOC 422 embedded storage switch, are available for purchase now.

"Emulex was the first to offer an embedded storage switch that addresses the industry's push into 4 Gb/s storage networking solutions. By working closely with NEC to deploy its next generation switched-based storage solutions, our joint customers are provided with a robust suite of products for both the entry-level and midrange markets," said Mike Smith, executive vice president of worldwide marketing, Emulex Corporation. "Utilizing InSpeed's cutting-edge technology, has helped NEC to provide unparalleled performance and reliability, and reinforces its position as a leading provider of midrange and entry-level storage solutions."

Emulex's InSpeed SOC 422 is the industry's first 4 Gb/s embedded storage switching solution, providing 22 ports of connectivity in a highly integrated device that is ideal for implementing a wide variety of embedded storage applications, including SBODs, root switches and fully switched architectures. As with all versions of InSpeed, this solution is backward-compatible, permitting flexibility in implementation and helping users avoid costly upgrades. NEC Storage S series combines the benefits of the InSpeed SOC 422 with additional state-of-the art technologies such as a high performance data path between dual controller cache memories, advanced diagnostic capabilities that enable preventive disk drive maintenance and up to 120 disk drives providing 25.7 terabytes (RAID-5) of storage. The NEC Storage S series line of disk arrays raises the bar in terms of the capabilities available in midrange and entry-level storage solutions.

"Emulex has long provided NEC with the most comprehensive, innovative products to help augment the performance, serviceability and reliability of the NEC Storage S series family of products," said Tetsuyuki Hishikawa, Senior Manager 1st Engineering Department System File Products Division, NEC Corporation. "As our customers migrate to next generation storage solutions, they are well-equipped to immediately benefit from enhanced reliability, availability and serviceability of the InSpeed solutions. Integrating the Emulex InSpeed SOC 422 makes it easy for NEC to deliver point-to-point switched connectivity to the individual drives in the storage array, and enable new diagnostic and preventative maintenance capabilities. Our customers will reap the rewards of this integrated solution."

About the Emulex InSpeed SOC 422 Embedded Storage Switch

Emulex's award-winning, field-proven InSpeed embedded storage switching technology enhances the reliability, availability, serviceability, and performance by bringing switched connectivity inside the storage system. With its third-generation InSpeed technology, Emulex has increased both the speed to 4 Gb/s and port count of its embedded storage switch technologies. In addition, the SOC 422 supports in-band communications, eliminating the need for a costly external processor for SCSI Enclosure Services (SES) and lowering OEM implementation costs by more than 50 percent over previous generations.
