Emulex 4Gb/s HBAs Selected by Sun Microsystems for New UltraSPARC T1-based Family of Sun Fire Servers

Sun's New Multi-Threading Technology Enables Server Consolidation and Increases Demand for SAN Connectivity

COSTA MESA, Calif., Dec. 7, 2005 (PRIMEZONE) -- Emulex Corporation (NYSE:ELX), the most trusted name in storage networking connectivity, today announced a next generation 4Gb/s HBA design win with Sun Microsystems. Sun selected the Emulex 4Gb/s SAN connectivity solutions for its new family of high performance UltraSPARC(r) T1-based Sun Fire(tm) servers with CoolThreads(tm) technology, designed to significantly increase system throughput, while significantly reducing power and energy consumption.

Sun's new breakthrough servers, based on the UltraSPARC T1 processor, offer a multi-core design with multiple threads for increased traffic flow and industry-leading performance - ideal for robust data center applications. Leveraging the PCI Express bus architecture and 4 Gb/s link speeds within the Solaris(tm) 10 Operating System (OS) environments provides the robust infrastructure to ensure maximum throughput capabilities, which are key to Sun's Throughput Computing strategy.

"Customers integrating new Sun Fire servers will undoubtedly require a high performance 4 Gb/s connectivity solution to tap into their Fibre Channel-based storage area networks (SANs)," said Mike Smith, executive vice president of worldwide marketing, Emulex Corp. "Emulex has expanded its OEM agreement with Sun to provide next generation 4 Gb/s HBAs that fully complement the paradigm-shifting performance and I/O processing capabilities inherent to the new UltraSPARC T-1 processor-based systems running Solaris 10."

"The innovative class of Sun servers announced today features new multi-threading technology to drastically increase performance, while improving energy and power consumption," said Stephen Borcich, vice president of Partner Marketing, Sun Microsystems. "Customers deploying new Sun UltraSPARC T1 servers into a SAN environment may leverage the Emulex 4 Gb/s SAN connectivity solution to complement the most data intensive computing environments."

Emulex single and dual-channel LPe110000 family of HBAs (Sun-branded Models: StorageTek SG-XPCIE1FC-EM4 and StorageTek SG-XPCIE2FC-EM4) are fully supported by Sun for use with Sun Fire Opteron- and UltraSPARC T1-based servers within the Solaris 10 OS environments. Emulex 4 Gb/s SAN connectivity solutions fully complement the industry-leading throughput and performance introduced by Sun's new multi-core server design. Availability of Sun-branded HBAs from Emulex enables Sun server customers to leverage the benefits of networked storage, while continuing to standardize on Emulex HBAs throughout their data centers.

Product Information and Availability

The Emulex FCA driver is available for both 2 Gb/s and 4 Gb/s Sun-branded HBAs (2Gb/s Models: StorEdge SG-XPCI1FC-EM2 and StorEdge(tm) SG-XPCI2FC-EM2). The 4 Gb/s Sun-branded HBAs from Emulex are available December 23, and offer full backward compatibility with 2Gb/s HBAs from Emulex. With a robust HBA driver implementation that complements the Solaris OS, customers may leverage the inherent scalability and performance advantages built into the Emulex family of HBAs.

The Sun-branded Emulex HBAs are also supported by Sun for Windows and Linux server environments, as part of Sun's Open SAN initiative. A major benefit for large heterogeneous data centers is Emulex's unique Universal Boot capability that allows end users to seamlessly deploy the same HBA across multiple hardware architectures and operating systems to enable FC boot from SAN. Additionally, Emulex is part of the Sun (sm) Partner Advantage Program and plans to leverage its various programs and benefits to provide sales support and education surrounding the benefits of standardizing on Emulex HBAs throughout the data center.
