Emulex Showcases New Fibre Channel HBA Technology for Server Virtualization at Cisco Networkers Show

Emulex HBAs Coupled with the Cisco 4Gb/s MDS 9020 Fabric Switch Demonstrates Industry-Leading Performance Within a VMware-based Virtualized Server Environment

CANNES, France, Dec. 13, 2005 (PRIMEZONE) -- Emulex Corporation (NYSE:ELX), the most trusted name in storage networking connectivity, today announced its collaboration with Cisco and VMware to showcase next generation server and storage networking solutions at the Cisco Networkers show in Cannes, France, December 12-14, 2005. Emulex is demonstrating compatibility and performance of the 4Gb/s LPe11000 PCI Express family of HBAs and the Cisco MDS 9020 4Gb/s Fabric Switch within a VMware-based server virtualization environment.

"Not only is Emulex showcasing the industry's first SAN Connectivity solution designed to improve security and data protection within virtualized server environments, we have also reached a major performance milestone with our newest 4Gb/s LightPulse Fibre Channel HBAs -- which delivers an astounding 33% more throughput than its nearest competitor," said Mike Smith, executive vice president of worldwide marketing, Emulex Corp. "With today's new multi-core, higher bandwidth servers, it is critical that SAN connectivity solutions exceed the performance requirements driven by this new class of solutions and Emulex is leading that charge."

The joint demonstration features VMware virtualization technology running multiple operating system environments within a high performance SAN environment, utilizing Emulex's generally available, virtualization-enabled LightPulse 4Gb/s Fibre Channel HBAs, along with industry-leading NPIV-enabled fabric switches from Cisco. Utilizing industry standard N_Port ID Virtualization (NPIV), Emulex's LightPulse Virtual HBA technology provides the foundation for improved SAN management, data protection, and application recovery by enabling virtual servers to use dedicated SAN resources. By incorporating support for the NPIV standard, Emulex's Virtual HBA technology enables server virtualization solutions to fully utilize key SAN management techniques, including zoning, LUN mapping and LUN masking to insure maximum data security.

Server virtualization enables end users to consolidate multiple applications onto fewer servers, reducing support costs, improving server utilization, and providing enhanced disaster recovery and application deployment capabilities. Networked storage is an ideal match for virtualized server environments because it enables application portability and highly reliable, consolidated storage access and resource management.
