Adapt4's XG1 Receives Certification as World's First Commercial Cognitive Radio

MELBOURNE, Fla., Jan. 12, 2006 (PRIMEZONE) -- The wireless industry took a giant step toward solving the riddle of dwindling radio spectrum availability today when Adapt4, LLC received Federal Communications Commission certification for the world's first commercial cognitive radio. The XG1 is the first in Adapt 4's family of intelligent wireless devices that makes use of already-licensed radio channels -- but only while they are not in use by others.

"For years, the FCC has recognized the inefficient use of the radio spectrum. At any given point in time, only about 10 percent of licensed radio channels are active," states Adapt4 Vice President Paul Greenis. Adapt4's new timesharing technology provides a practical solution to that dilemma and establishes the Melbourne, Florida company as the industry leader in the migration toward more efficient use of the radio airways.

The XG1, a "plug and play" data communications device, employs a patent-pending technology, known as ASAP (Automatic Spectral Adaptation Protocol) to detect and avoid other users. Parameters defining frequency band, modulation and maximum output power are preloaded at the factory to eliminate operator errors. The XG1 continually monitors User ID/Password, Authorized Site Lists, and unalterable Electronic Serial Numbers to maximize security. Under FCC guidelines, XGs will incorporate features such as multiple frequency bands, higher transmit power, a USB port, Voice-Over-IP, GPS, Bluetooth, WiFi and other adapters.

The XG1's nearly limitless applications include first responder disaster relief, public safety, critical infrastructure and transportation. The Adapt4 radio is permitted to operate on licensed channels as a secondary user because its stealth-like qualities allow operation on a non-interfering basis amid licensed primary users. Delivery of XG1 production models is anticipated for the first quarter of 2006.

For the first time, the radio spectrum can be utilized to its maximum potential.
