Hungarian Girl Caught in Oppression of War -- First Installment of Series Based on True Events

FOREST HILLS, N.Y., Jan. 13, 2006 (PRIMEZONE) -- In a heartbreaking new novel based on the true story of a little Jewish girl in Hungary, From Vera's Recollections: Book I (now available through AuthorHouse), Lily RL Kalman describes how a series of tragic events put Vera Shoenfeld in a dire situation.

When Vera's father dies, the pain she experiences is compounded by the frustration of being sent to an orphanage. Her extreme hatred for the institution led her to count the days until her eight years of schooling were completed and she could return to her separated family, which she still visits on school holidays.

Just three months before her education was to end, the German army occupied Hungary in March 1944. They emptied the orphanage, and Vera moved in with an aunt. As the restrictions and laws against Hungarian Jews increased under the fascist regime, people could not leave their homes without permits and were moved into specially marked houses.

Desperate to be with her family, Vera planned to walk the 200 kilometers from Budapest, where her aunt lives, to her hometown. Just before her departure, however, she receives a letter from her mother and brother, informing her that they have been waiting to be shipped off, but have no idea where.

A moving story about a young girl essentially left alone in the middle of a war, From Vera's Recollections: Book I describes the early life of this determined child.

Kalman left Hungary in 1956 after the Hungarian revolution and emigrated to the United States. In order to learn English quickly, she began writing many of her childhood memories, which later became From Vera's Recollections: Book I, the first in a series of two volumes.
