Emulex Ships 10 Millionth InSpeed Port

Major Milestone Points to Market Acceleration and Broad Adoption of InSpeed Embedded Storage Switches

COSTA MESA, Calif., Jan. 17, 2006 (PRIMEZONE) -- Emulex Corporation (NYSE:ELX), the most trusted name in storage networking connectivity, today announced that it has surpassed the 10 millionth shipped InSpeed(TM) embedded storage switch port. Emulex's award-winning InSpeed products, which began shipping in May 2002, have secured embedded design wins with eight of the top ten storage providers, and is now shipping at over two times the rate of all Fibre Channel fabric switch ports from all vendors combined.

"This is a tremendous milestone for Emulex and we are thrilled with the storage market's rapid adoption and deployment of InSpeed as the de facto standard for embedded storage switching," said Jim McCluney, president and chief operating officer, Emulex Corp. "With eight of the top ten storage OEMs currently leveraging the unique point-to-point switching benefits of InSpeed, it remains the only broadly deployed, field-proven Fibre Channel embedded storage switch technology in the market."

InSpeed, which currently supports more than 620 Petabytes of data storage, was the first technology to bring point-to-point Fibre Channel switching inside the storage array, enabling new levels of Reliability, Availability and Serviceability (RAS) and performance while scaling for storage systems. Leading storage providers such as Engenio, IBM, HP, Network Appliance, Fujitsu, Xyratex, Quantum, NEC and Sun Microsystems have already deployed multiple generations of embedded storage solutions with InSpeed technology.

"When InSpeed was first introduced four years ago, I told the world that if storage OEMs aren't using a switched back-end, they will need to explain why. This milestone not only validates the strong market demand for InSpeed, but reinforces the tremendous benefits derived from embedded switching, such as improved performance, serviceability and availability," said Steve Duplessie, founder and senior analyst, Enterprise Strategy Group. "With nearly all of the storage OEMs as customers, Emulex continues to raise the bar in terms of delivering innovative technologies that improve the functionality of storage systems worldwide."

Emulex is now driving the adoption of the FC-SATA industry standard that natively attaches nearline ready SATA disk drives into embedded Fibre Channel storage infrastructures to lower storage system costs while leveraging existing investments made by storage system providers. Additionally, Emulex's all-new, FibreSpy(TM) embedded storage switching technology, which integrates seamlessly with InSpeed and enables additional levels of design flexibility and scalability for tiered storage system enablement, provides more choices for storage OEMs leveraging the benefits of embedded storage switch technologies.
