Beceem Communications First to Release Chipset for the Newly Approved IEEE 802.16e Mobile Broadband Standard

Company is First to Release Terminal Chipset for Commercial Production and Establishes Technology and Product Leadership in the Emerging Mobile WiMax Market

SAN JOSE, Calif., Jan. 18, 2006 (PRIMEZONE) -- Beceem Communications (www.beceem.com), a leading provider of chipsets for the mobile broadband market, today announced that it has just released the world's first terminal chipset implementing a feature set based entirely on the new IEEE 802.16e Mobile WiMAX standard. In so doing Beceem is the first to demonstrate and make available a commercial Mobile WiMAX/WiBro chipset solution that is suitable for mobile, portable and fixed applications.

Beceem's MS120 Mobile WiMAX terminal solution contains:

-- A digital baseband chip that includes the entire Physical Layer
(PHY) and Media Access Control (MAC) functionality. An embedded
RISC processor implements the MAC functionality thereby
minimizing processing load on the host processor.

-- An integrated radio chip (RF) designed for multi-band operation
containing multiple transmit/receive chains thereby minimizing
cost, foot print and power consumption for Mobile WiMAX
    implementations.

-- A complete reference design kit for the "WiMAX Modem" including
host driver software and RF calibration tools which will enable
terminal OEMs and ODMs to quickly produce WiMAX compliant devices.

"We are proud to announce the commercial availability of our first Mobile WiMAX chipset today. Our scalable chip architecture together with our efficient algorithms enables a highly cost-effective and power-efficient digital baseband implementation for WiMAX," says Babu Mandava, president and co-founder of Beceem. "In addition, we developed a radio chip that is perfectly matched to meet the stringent demands of an OFDMA airlink. This gives our chipset an additional performance and cost advantage over other chipset solutions that are pieced together from multiple vendor products."

The MS120 chipset is designed to operate in the challenging low signal-to-noise environments prevalent in hand-offs and the edge of wireless networks. Therefore, Beceem believes that its MS120 Mobile WiMAX/WiBro chipset will:

-- Set the benchmark for Mobile WiMAX chipsets due to its high
performance, small footprint, power efficiency and time-to-market
    leadership.

-- Accelerate the market for Mobile WiMAX by making available
high-throughput terminals that significantly outperform 3G-based
    solutions.

-- Enable the rapid emergence of the terminal ecosystem for Mobile
WiMAX due to the completeness and simplicity of the MS120
    reference design kit.

The MS120 chipset has been sampled to lead customers and reference design kits are immediately available upon request. For more information please visit www.beceem.com.
