The early nod was given by Tribeca when the festival learned that both the South by Southwest festival and the Florida International Film Festival were also vying for the film's premiere.

American Cannibal examines the juggernaut of reality TV and its effects on programming and audiences, and has sparked extraordinary controversy for its exposure of the more lurid aspects of reality-based entertainment. In addition to interviews with network executives, TV producers and psychologists, the film documents the ill-fated production of The Ultimate, Ultimate Challenge, a Survivor-like reality show produced by Kevin Blatt, promoter of the Paris Hilton sex tape.
American Cannibal: The Road to Reality is directed by Perry Grebin and Michael Nigro, who are also producing the film with Denis Jensen under their company banner Acme Pictures, and Gill Holland of LasalleHolland.
