Speech-Language Pathologist Writes Guide for Parents -- New Book Shows the Importance of Quality Language Stimulation for Infants and Preschoolers

MOUNT KISCO, N.Y., Feb. 1, 2006 (PRIMEZONE) -- Talk it up! There has been growing interest in recent years in how adults verbally interact with infants and toddlers and how "conversations" with them affect their language development, literacy acquisition, and eventual performance in school. Studies continue to be conducted by the International Reading Association, the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services exploring the impact of preschool education on future academic success, and increasingly, evidence has indicated the importance of high-quality speech and language stimulation during infancy and early childhood. Now there is a book, written with parents in mind, on how they can play a pivotal role in stimulating the language development of their babies and preschoolers -- Talk Me Into It by Dr. Susan L. Pike.

A practical and thorough guide on child language development, this trailblazing book translates the scientific research into easy-to-understand layman's terms. It is divided into three sections: "Learning to Talk," which identifies the significant features of listening and speaking through the various stages of infancy and early childhood; "Talking Together," which explains the principles and strategies for stimulating language development; and "Talking to Learn," which helps parents prepare their child for success in the social and academic world of the classroom.

Packed with useful information and tips, Talk Me Into It is not only ideal for parents, but for grandparents, daycare providers, and kindergarten teachers as well. Its in-depth coverage of the stages of early speech development, from infancy to early childhood, and its "Top Ten Lists of Activities" and "Books to Buy or Borrow" for each stage also make this a valuable resource for entry-level practitioners in speech-language pathology.
