Northrop Grumman Recognized as Clean Business of the Year


NEWPORT NEWS, Va., March 17, 2006 (PRIMEZONE) -- Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE:NOC) has been recognized as the Clean Business of the Year by the City of Newport News' Department of Public Works. The company received the award for its recycling efforts in 2005.

In an award letter to Northrop Grumman, Uganda Taylor, acting assistantrecycling coordinator of the Solid Waste Division for the city, thankedNorthrop Grumman's Newport News sector for its "tireless environmentalstewardship activities in helping keep Newport News beautiful."

"As the largest industrial employer in Virginia, we have a responsibility to our employees and the community to protect and preserve the environment," said Bob Gunter, senior vice president of operations, Northrop Grumman Newport News. "Recycling is one example of how we can make a difference, and this award honors our employees who have made environmental excellence a way of life at the shipyard."

Northrop Grumman Newport News began recycling efforts over 100 years ago by melting and reusing scrap steel. In 1990 the sector increased efforts to reduce industrial waste by creating a pollution prevention program that encouraged the recycling of metal drums, asphalt and other materials, which decreased waste by 50 percent. Today, Newport News recycles a variety of products such as office paper, cardboard, respirator filters and metal, and has averaged more than 45,000 tons of recycled and reused material annually, for the past 10 years.
